I wouldn't be surprised if the VANOS is the problem, I know it can cause some weird idle issues, especially when cold.

It has to be at this point. Only other thing that "might" be possible is the ignition coils. Mix of really old and really new. Shouldn't have an effect but who knows with this car lol. Maybe I'll get some new ones and replace them. But we'll see after the Vanos is done.

Finally on to the vanos o-rings. Looks like mine aren't leaking except for possibly the lower one on bank 1. But otherwise nice and clean surprisingly. Either one of the previous owners already changed them at one point, or my originals are really holding up good. Now comes the fun part. finally got around to racking up my impulse buy last Christmas from the homeboy depot, seeing as how we're under the stay home order and we got 7 days of rain predicted

its mostly all duplicates, except for the largest 1/2" stuff, but hey, 200 sockets for under 100 bucks. only problem is theres no room for em in my 3/8 drive box, a 26" milwaukee, which i call my 100 lb toolbox. is there another roll around impulse buy in my future for next Christmas?

Man I'm still kicking myself for not buying tool storage chest and cabinets when all the local Sears by me shut down couple years ago. They had those for STUPID cheap during the last 2 weeks. I know Craftsman isn't what it used to be (nothing is anyways) but when their largest chest that was normally $900 was going for $200!...D'OH!! Really could use that now with all the crap I have.

Damn, that's a good deal on the Craftsman chest! I have a 3 piece 26ish inch (I think) Craftsman chest that I bought off my cousin a little over a year ago, and it's alright but it feels a little flimsy compared to the US General ones from Harbor Freight. The new Craftsman stuff at Lowe's is a little better, but still not as good as HF.
I also have the US General 30" 5 drawer cart that I use pretty much every day, and it's fantastic. One of my favorite things I've gotten from HF. The quality is excellent for the price, and you can fit a lot in it. The fold-out tray is also a nice add-on.

That 200 piece Husky socket set was an awesome deal, I almost bought one when it was on clearance for like $59 when they had maybe 2 left, but I already have too many sockets. I picked up the big torx/hex bit set with a "free" ratchet for $20.

All done. As a pain as they were to remove, the solenoid boards were worse that to put back in! Super tight fit. The drivers side wasn't too bad. I was able to use the cover plate with a breaker bar leveraged with the front engine hoist mount to pop it back in. Passenger side was more difficult because there was nothing to work off of. So I sadly had to use the expansion tank as a leverage point. Luckily I replaced it since its ok. I'm sure the original tank would've cracked if it was still in.

Annoyingly the cover gasket on the passenger side got caught between the board and the vanos housing. Tried to gently pull it out without having to re-remove the solenoids but no dice, it broke. Don't have any gasket maker to use so I just tightened it as snug as I could without snapping the cover bolts. Those bolts take VERY little torque, I think like 10-15lbs. Will order a new one in the next few days, luckily those are cheap, unlike the o-rings.

Besides those things, it was actually fun to work on lol. Now time to clean everything up and take it for a spin. Thought to be honest, I'm not expecting any change. Thinking about it now I'm sure the occasional poor idle is down to all the deteriorated hoses underneath the plenum. Some of the broken connectors probably aren't seating as well either, so will try to tackle that in the future.

Yeah, they were really trying to clear all the Christmas sale stuff out. That was probably the end of January.

Back from the drive and all is well. Did pull codes for cylinder 3 and 4 misfire. But I've noticed it did the same thing when I changed the camshaft and throttle position sensors. Car runs fine, so probably just one of those hiccups from the work being done. If it keeps happening though, I might just get all new ignition coils and be done with it. Time will tell.

Either that, or there's something up with the ignition coil wiring. Could dig further into it but don't want to or care to lol.
