2015 X1 Nav system

Hey Folks
My first thread here. My wife is just about to pull the trigger on a low mileage X1 2015. Unfortunately it doesn't come with the swanky Nav system. Any suggestions on finding one, after market? I tried Crutchfield but they said they don't have any mounting kits or adapter harnesses for X1s. She'd love the backup camera and Nav stuff. Apple CarPlay would be very helpful.
Thanks for any advice.

I have often looked at this one for my X1:

I have NAV on my 2013, but I use Google maps on my iphone, so much better. The dashboard cup holder holds the phone perfectly.

I have NAV on my 2012 and will not use an Alphabet product like G00gle.

No problem. If you do get something, make sure to post a thread about it Not many folks go the aftermarket route, so I'd definitely be curious what your thoughts are on it.

I've looked at the same sort of system Yukoner mentioned as I have an very base level X1 xdrive35i... The most important thing is Bluetooth with your phone (Not just phone calls, but Waze, Music, etc.), and for that, we used Tune2Air, which interfaces with the USB/IPod interface. It's a bit buggy, but for a $100, live with it for now. Would be curious to know if anyone puts a system like the one from 4x4shop.ca into their e84.

Cheers, and may this New Year bring us all trouble free miles

I am on my second cheap Chinese android head unit with NAV and backup camera, it wasn't to hard to install, neither came with directions and I can't get the bluetooth to pickup audio from the built in mic in the overhead, everything else seems to working good. Mine is a 2013 X1, that originally had the storage box in the center dash.

Interesting. Yours is "within" the storage compartment versus some newer ones that "stick out" like the OEM one. Kind of interesting actually. Just curious - how much did you pay for yours?

Thanks for sharing. I'm pretty close to pulling the trigger, but 6-700 is quite a bit to spend for a backup cam (lived my whole life without one!) and "better" bluetooth LOL

I'm a bit leery of just getting something off aliexpress, versus some retailers like 4x4, avin. Then there is the whole question of bluetooth, 7.1, 8, 9 (thinking 9), which processor, resolution, external dongle vs. built-in Carplay, etc. Sigh.

At this point, if I do it at all, I'm thinking I'll go with 4x4 Canada, the 10.25" screen with Android 9, the base processor (32GB ROM vs. 64), lower resolution (1280x480 vs 1920x720), then opt for a hard-wired backup cam, noise cancelling mic, and CarPlay dongle - assuming I don't have to plug in my phone to actually use carplay. (I heard the wireless/built-in carplay still has issues)

Can anyone confirm that the dongle is just an extra piece that takes up a USB port on the system, but still goes 'wirelessly" to your phone?

Other than that, I might consider the higher resolution screen for an additional $60. Thoughts on that? But it's not like I'm going to be watching movies on the thing - who does that!? LOL...

Again, a lot to spend for something I've never seen and am not certain if I will "love it". And for that amount, I better love it!

I'll let everyone know if I pull the trigger!

I'd do it. At this point, you're already ~$700.00 in just for the unit. Then either more $$$ for install labour or your own time. Honestly, $60.00 more isn't going to make or break this kind of project, so personally, I'd go for it as I would want the best resolution possible.

What did you get for a backup camera? Did you implement CarPlay?

Yours looks to be an in-dash model with a smaller screen, no? But this looks comparable to the one I was evaluating:

Following this thread with interest - new owner of 2015 X1 and new forum member. My X1 has the Professional unit, no screen, no bluetooth except for phone calls, and (obviously) no backup camera. I don't care about nav per se - Waze is a better option for me - but I want bluetooth audio and backup camera. I can't seem to get a straight answer about whether it's even possible to retrofit an iDrive head unit and screen into my car, and I'm just starting to learn about the Android aftermarket options. One concern about the Android units is that the audio feed seems to be solely through the aux jack, which seems clunky and I've heard is not great sound quality. Also not a huge fan of Apple Carplay...

Thoughts, anyone?

Your cheapest and most immediate solution is to get a device called Tune2Air, which plugs into both the USB (for power and "ipod" functionality controls) and Aux for the sound. Overall it works decent. It uses the USB port to fake as if it's an iPod so you can still skip songs with the steering wheel controls.

Mine has been a bit buggy. It is supposed to be able to show "iPOD" when it connects when you select the audio system with the stock unit, but it doesn't always show up. Instead it shows USB and Aux. (Aux still may work just without the steering wheel controls.)

But I'm also wondering if that is a problem with my Combox/USB system in my car. I may try to power the device with a microUSB plug, since the USB port doesn't support drawing more than 700ma. (I saw an error code in my ISTA+ software and that was the reason given, but it was also at a mileage point of before I owned the car.) Still, I can't for the life of me determine how much energy the Tune2Air is drawing, which is annoying.

Anyway, read the reviews on Amazon and give it a shot. Otherwise you're looking at something a LOT more involved (ie - installing one of these aftermarket units.) I still haven't pulled the trigger, but it's on the project list.

Short answer ? It's cheaper for you to sell your car and buy one that has the iDrive option installed from factory.

Yes, you CAN get iDrive installed. IIRC, cost to have it done at the dealer was ~$7K USD. In most cases, that price tag is higher than simply selling your X1 and buying a different (used) one that already has iDrive from the factory.
