G30 (2017 - Current)
The next generation 5 Series, chassis code G30, arrives at dealers in February 2017. Looking like a scaled down 7 Series and riding on the CLAR platform, the new 5 Series will have a focus on lightweight and sporty performance. Engines options will come from BMW's new B family for the 530 and 540 and a turbocharged V8 for the M550i. Read more about the 2017 5 Series

Mega Key case ideas?

Anyone with the huge remote / key find a good case for it? Seems the BMW dealer doesn't have anything yet.

And here's a better image of the case with the key inside.

thanks... God could they make that pic any smaller? lol

I guess it must be decent if it's $50!

Dropped the key once already and don't feel like paying $750 plus tax for a new one!

I have this case from BMW. It is not practical because every time you want to use the key you need to take it out of the case and you might drop it. The best case is from Mont Blanc. I will get one of these. Here is the link

The key is big enough. I couldn't imagine it with a case. I just keep mine in a pocket and phone in another pocket. Neither pocket has change or other keys.

Related question: Do any of you guys regret getting the massive key? I believe the response is also laggy, but you cannot deny the cool factor of the remote parking. Also, do they give a regular sized key as well to carry when you don't want the massive one in your pockets?

RE:Case, I've seen some pretty good ones in UK reviews with a transparent/cutout for the screen. Looked OEM.

No regrets and the car came with two regular BMW remotes.

Cool! Then size and recharging is not an issue when you're not showboating

Here's the pic of the cover I think is appropriate without adding additional heft to the already big key, (from a UK review):

You're talking about your key FOB, right?

I personally would not spend the money on that feature because the FOB is so big. And I seriously don't want to remotely park my car.

I just found this one on eBay: ALCATARA Display Smart Key Case

I think I like the looks, so I went ahead and ordered one. Unfortunately I won't get the key (and respective car) for a few more months. I'll post back when I get the case if anyone is interested in what I think.

Not much I can add over the eBay listing (assuming it's still up) as far as pics go. I haven't taken delivery yet - that's less than a week away (I'm getting nervous/excited!!!!!). I will update when I can, as it's already packed for the trip so I don't forget it.

First overall impression, though, is that it's just a very basic silicone sleeve for the key. So, I don't know how much hope I'm holding out for fit when I get the key. Many cheaper silicone sleeves I've seen for cell phones have really poor fitting; some are decent.

I do plan on updating, hopefully some time next week if time and wifi availability coincide.

OK, so just got back from ED, and can post more info on the Alcantara key case.

First, the fit - The fit is excellent. The case is actually a pretty firm rubberishy/plasticy(??) type of material, and fits the key snuggly. In fact, I had to push quite firmly to get the key set inside the case. Once in, no wiggles or issues. It also took a bit of work to get the key back out of the case. In my opinion, it actually does look quite nice on the key (I got the black/grey case). The case lines up with the contours of the key nicely and looks like a good quality case.

Wireless charging also works just fine with the case on. There is also a hole in the side so you can access the USB charging port.

The case also has a 'plate' (for lack of a better word) that you can optionally insert (before inserting the key) which allows you to connect a key ring. It also comes with a leather loop and a wire loop for key ring attachment. I've attached the leather loop, that way if I want to put the key in my backpack or laptop bag, I can attach it to the key tether in the bag. I don't think I'll be attaching a bundle of keys to this thing.

The one downside that I've had with the case is that it does not have any texture/marking at the Engine Start button. The power button is covered by the case, but there is a "button texture" there, so you can tactically feel the button without looking. There is no such area for the Engine Start button. While in Europe, when I had to use the remote parking feature, it took me a minute of feeling around to find the Engine Start button through the case.

After getting home, I've marked the Engine Start button area with a Sharpie for now. This at least gives me a visual indicator of where the button is. (Not that it matters...I won't have the car for a few more weeks ) What I'm planning on trying is finding something around the house about the right size that I can use as like a branding iron. This way, I can at least put some texture around the Engine Start button. We'll see how that goes!

So, for now, I'm keeping the case on the Display Key. I didn't think of taking any pictures last night, so I'll try to remember to do that tonight and post a few.

As promised, here are a few photos of case + key. As I mentioned earlier, the sharpie Mark on the side is the location of the Engine Start button.
