Map update issues

Trying to update the maps on my 2014 X1. Iíve downloaded the nav files and put them on a new 32 GB USB flash drive, but nothing happens when I plug it into the glovebox USB port. I read something about removing invisible files when loading from a Mac. Might this be the issue?

TIA,

Bill in NH

If you've formatted with the Mac it won't work correctly. Disk Utility uses eXFAT rather than FAT32. The CIC unit in these cars are very particular about the format of the flash drive for map updates. Look for free flash drive formatting tools that support FAT32. If not I may be able to make you an ISO file you could restore to your flash drive with Disk Utility.

Thanks, while I used my Mac to load the files, the flash drive came pre-formatted FAT32. Oh, and it is a USB 2 drive. I'm going to fire up an old Windows laptop and look for "hidden" Mac files that might need stripping out. Thanks.

Remember that Windows 7 and later don't actually do FAT32 anymore. Disk format will allows eXFAT only through the OS. I had so many issues updating my F07 and E84 on my Mac and with Windows and finally determined it was all due to formatting. I finally found a freeware app specifically for formatting thumb drives that did a great job on Windows 10

Get Info on my Mac shows the formatting as FAT32. I"m gonna head over to our IT department and plug it into a Windows box and check things out. Thanks for the link! I'll check it out when I get home if necessary. Thanks, Bill

Good luck and don't give up. I found that Max OS Sierra through Mojave all say FAT32... when it's any FAT variant. Basically DiskUtility can't tell the sub-variation.

The Windows box in IT also claims the flash drive is FAT32, but I'm sure it was running a "modern" OS. I'll check it on my ancient Windows laptop at home tonight. Thanks, B

Problem solved! I left the USB drive in while I drove to work this morning and it looks like all it needed was a bit more time for the drive to be recognized by the system. After a quick FSC code purchase from Ebay, I now have the latest maps loaded!

I was going to say, you don't need to format the USB drives in FAT32. I did my E90 in NTFS and had no issues. I also use a USB for my music, NTFS formatted, no issues.

I can't seem to remember how to start a new question.

I have a 2014 X1 28XI. I asked the dealer about what it would cost to update the maps. He told me it would be over $400. I thought that steep. The current maps don't always take me where I want to go in a city like Miami, FL.

I downloaded the map data from here: https://www.oemnavigations.com/colle...wnload-torrent

Bought a lifetime code from e-bay. Took a bit of fiddling, but worked out great!

Good luck.

Twiddling:

Sadly, at age 75, my twiddling days seem to be about over. Yesterday, I couldn't even figure out how to start a new thread here about this subject.

But I appreciate the help. It shouldn't be as difficult as it seems to be to upgrade the maps. I think that the dealer sales rep was going to upgrade the entire computer program in the Vehicle. The car runs fine. Why would I want to futz with something that isn't broken? I just want my maps tp be more current.

Go to this thread:

And look for the poster shawnsheridan. He can send you the maps. It's a pretty simple process, you download the maps and then move the files to 4 different USB flash drives. Plug the drives into the car, one at a time (when prompted), and bam, all done. His instructions are very thorough and it's a pretty painless process. I've done it on 2 cars thus far.

What's the "ACK" in BillACK? Are you connected to Nantucket? (Nantucket)?

No Nantucket connection. "ACK!" as in Bill the Cat from Bloom County.

Never heard of Bill The Cat. You sure Bill wasn't born on Nantucket and adopted out to Bloom County? There's a shortage of available cats there now.

If you don't want to "twiddle" ... there are also places that will do all the work for you and send the map data on a thumb drive that you can upload for a fee.

For example, the following link offers download and USB thumb drive options that still cost way less than the $400 you were quoted to update your Nav maps from BMW: https://bmwnavupdate.com/
