If you saw the new 3 Series and have been waiting on tenterhooks for the new 3 Series GT, we've got some bad news for you, and you exclusively: the 3 Series GT is officially dead.

Although we’ve heard plenty of rumors and although BMW’s leadership has hinted heavily that the car wouldn’t return, we now have official confirmation.

Harald Kruger, chairman of the BMW board of management, said “there will be no successor” to the 3 Series GT during a speech about the company’s first-quarter results.

The comment follows comments made by Klaus Frohlich, another executive, late last year. Back then, Frohlich explained that the 3 Series GT occupies a small niche that’s increasingly being consumed by crossovers and SUVs.

So, if you’re into weirdly tall fastbacks, we're sorry for your loss.
