Looking at a 2012 6501 vert

Hello, my name is Mark.

I joined to research a car I am looking at possibly buying. A 2012 650i vert.

Already I have begun reading about the N63 and related oil consumption.
It appears there is something done about this? How specifically should I ask if this has been done?

The car has 63K and is in quite good condition. Are there any other things to be aware of?

Offer up your knowledge to help me.

Mark

You should be able to get the service records from the deanship, just provide the VIN. On the 2012, you want to make sure all the necessary recalls were done and no open recalls remaining. You know about the N63 issue so just make sure you have the dealer do the oil consumption test to see if you qualify. My guess is you will and so you should get a new motor at some point. Hey, that is a good deal seeing that you might keep the car for a while and you love it. I have a 2012 Vert and the car has been solid so far except for the N63 issue but no electronic issues to speak of. I have about 66K miles on mine.

Welcome to the forum. As above, I also have a 650i vert, 2012 and other than the N63 related issues the car is solid. Fuel economy is good for the class of car, general maintenance is easy enough to DIY and despite being a now discontinued model and quite a couple of years old it still commands attention.Just check the service history :-)

Avoid the N63 if you care about reliability, the 640i models have the N55 and are much better. If you really want a V8, get a 2014 or newer with the N63T.

Actually it's a 2013 or newer for the N63T.

Just to follow up what Walt stated above in regards to the N63 & N63TU engines...they didn't roll out evenly...some models got the "TU" engine in 2013 and some models got it in 2014. Those that jump around in the 5/6/7/X5 forums can get the 2013 & 2014 roll out of the N63TU confused.

N63B44O0
The initial version of the N63 produces 300 kW (402 bhp) and 600 N-m (443 lb-ft).
Applications:
  • 2008 2013 E71 X6
  • 2009 2012 F01/F02 750i/750Li[11]
  • 2010 2012 F07 550i GT
  • 2011 2013 F10/F11 550i
  • 2011 2013 E70 X5
  • 2012 2012 F12/F13 650i
N63B44O1 (N63TU)
The first technical update resulted in an increase to 331 kW (444 bhp) and 50 N-m (479 lb-ft).
Applications:
  • 20132015 F01/F02 750i/750Li
  • 20132016 F07 550i GT
  • 20142016 F10/F11 550i
  • 20142018 F15 X5
  • 20142019 F16 X6
  • 20132018 F12/F13 650i
  • 20132019 F06 650i

Just to follow up even more, the reason I said 2014+ was because of NBT navigation. The F06/F12/F13 model year changes are difficult to follow and I think there are even differences between the F06 and F12/F13. Here's what I know, feel free to correct me if I'm wrong:

MY2013:
  • N63T engine

MY2014:
  • NBT navigation
  • 6WB dynamic digital cluster (optional)

MY2015:
  • iDrive touch controller
  • 6WB dynamic digital cluster (standard)

MY2016:
  • LCI (exterior and interior cosmetic changes only)
