Well I might be safe. One VIN website said I had N6344O. bmwvin.com said it is N63T.

I just looked at the window sticker sheet and it said the following on the engine:
4.4 liter, 400 hp and Double VANOS steplessly variable valve timing.

so 400 hp would indicate the higher HP "T" engine maybe??

If you have the original window sticker it should say "valvetronic" if you have N63TU

Well, both of you are a real buzz kill this morning. Nothing on sticker saying Valvetronic.

so guess I got the old engine.

Sorry Marco for high jacking your thread and all your problems. Buying what is thought to be a very nice car that is not old at all and in 6mo having engine let go would just send me to the emergency with a coronary.

So your thread was good in a way to convince guys like me to get the extended warranty.

Man.. I never felt highjacked.. it's more of a good thing in hearing from others... I really love my car and the whole experience in my situation sucks at this point... I'm a master captain of a large ship and I'm on the water for 2 weeks at a time and when I return one of my favorite things is my car... now that's in shambles... but I truly still feel like there are good people and most try to be that way - with that said I just really hope some of those same people are who make the decision on what can be done for me in my situation as far as BMW and the people connected to giving me some assistance

We don't know what anything new is going to be until it has been tested by time. I bought a new 2016 trying to get some distance away from the early engine and still only have the 1st update. If everything was corrected in the N63TU then why a TU2 followed by a TU3 a couple years later? This is my personal opinion but I believe the problem lies in the hot-V design because of the two turbochargers residing side by side there. We have all those unprotected rubber hoses in close proximity to extreme heat from the turbos and the reverse flow design of the cylinder heads places the hot side of the heads in there also. There was a service bulletin with parts kit issued recently for the M5 which consists of heat suppressing insulation wrap with attachment hardware to cover all the lines and hoses near the turbos. I asked my service manager if the parts will fit my 550 and he said he would look into it.

Yeah Rusty34 I really think they may just have a CCP in the future for the early TU engines - I'm no BMW know it all but with the amount of these out there that are coming up on similar miles as I have and if enough start to fail maybe it'll be voluntary by BMW as the original N63 was - or at least a assist in repairs

Just got off the phone with my BMW service rep. He researched the records for my 2013 and said the engine is N63T which is 400 hp. the TU is 440 hp. He said the "T" has the upgrades vs the N63 with all the heat, and injector issues.

Just so many versions of the same engine out there to keep it all straight. I hope the rep is correct, I guess the "test of time" will tell sometime in the future. Sad though to have a $100K car and you hope it makes it to 60-70K miles.

My build sheet says N63T as well but it also states it's 445hp - which my dealer told me it's a TU - also the engine cover on a N63TU is black and the N63 is grey that was told to me by the 18yr BMW master tech

Here's the window sticker from a 2014. Notice it says Valvetronic near the top under Standard Features

Something is strange about the HP ratings. Everything I've ever read about the 2013 6 Series is that the V8 has 445 HP. Here's a quote from a Car & Driver article about the 2013:

"The Gran Coupe is offered with three engines in Europe, two of which well get in the 640i and 650i. The former is powered by a 315-hp, 3.0-liter, single-turbo gasoline inline-six producing 330 lb-ft of torque; the latter uses BMWs twin-turbo, 4.4-liter V-8 with 445 hp and 480 lb-ft of torque. (We wont see the 640d or its 309-hp diesel six with 465 lb-ft of torque.)"

I have 650i GC W 37K miles. Had the same problem with engine that requir to replace it. The dealer said my problem is not covered by the program and I am not welling to spend 30k to replace the engine. I considering selling the car as is.

This article refers to the Gran Coupe right? Since the Gran Couoe was launched in 2013, is it fair to say that ALL Gran Coupe have the N63TU?

Not sure about that but if your engine has Valvetronic you have N63TU. If you do not have Valvetronic, you have the earlier N63. N63TU will have a Valvetronic control unit on each side of the engine in front. You can do a Google search for images to get examples of what to look for on your engine in order to identify which one you have. Dunno whether the engine top cover color is a reliable way to tell. The cover color seems to be more relative to the vehicle, whether a 550i, X5, or X6, etc.

Good tip. By looking at the two pictures below, would it make sense to say that the first one is the N63 and the second one with two triangular boxes on the front is the N63TU?

Thanks also to the posters above for the reference to bmwvin.com. According to this site, my recently acquired 2013 650xi GC was built in October 2012 and has a N63T engine (it doesn't say N63Tu though) with power of 330kw (i.e. 445hp). Can anyone having a 2014+ MY confirm that the site also returns a N63T engine type (even it's called N63Tu)? Thx.

Interesting comparison of engine pics. Thats what I was looking for in previous comments, something visual that would key in to the new or old engine. my vin search said N63T (and not TU) also and my 2013 was made July 2012. See my engine pick in comment #37, it has the two triangle packs. The only thing muddying up which engine I have is the window sticker which does NOT say Valvetronic and says 400 HP. I'm just to the point of driving the damn thing and if it blows up at 40-50K mi. oh well

I am curious how the effort of the OP in this thread is doing on getting a new engine.

Those boxes which appear triangular in the pictures are actually the intercoolers for the turbochargers. Below is a picture of the valvetronic actuator on a 2015 N63TU. You might be able to see it better in the dark with a flashlight.

Thanks @Rusty34 but the link to the picture is broken. Can you please repost? Thx.

N63Tu has the coolant reservoir at the rear left of the vehicle near the firewall. The N63 has the coolant reservoir next to the Power Steering reservoir.

Learned this the hard way as i was so used to putting in coolant on my N63 where the power steering pump is I accidentally added coolant to the Power Steering fluid when i first topped up my N63TU.

As I was reading into this a little more it appears the 5-Series started receiving the N63TU in July of 2013 for the 2014 model year. 6 and 7 Series received the N63TU one year earlier for their 2013 model years

A lot confusion but ALL Model Year 2013 650i Coupes, Verts and Gran Coupes have the N63TU. Builds for the 2013 650i officially began mid to late July 2012.

Here's my story. Went through my original paperwork/emails and at the time special ordered my 2013 650i on June 22, 2012 and was assigned a build on week 37, August 22. Car was delivered October 7, 2012. One of the main reasons for my purchase was the new 445hp/490tq N63TU's for all ordered 650i 2013.

At the time when the announcement for the new engine came out in June 2012, rightfully so, the first model year 2012 650i owners were furious that BMW would upgrade the engine Only after 1 year of the new body. The first year owners were quite upset and did let their feelings be known here on Bimmerfest.
