Rear camera**finally had something go wrong

Well after a few months of ownership on my 2013 650i Coupe I finally had something go wrong.

Yesterday put the car in reverse and camera works but the BMW emblem doesn't open up. I don't think I've read anything about this type of problem happening to anyone.

Is this a first.....anyone heard about this one before?

Does it move freely, manually by hand? Perhaps something lodged in there could've burnt out the motor. Just a thought. Never heard this one before.

The emblem does move manually and I can tell the camera works as well, it just doesn't open up for the camera. Maybe something will change before I bring her in for service next Thursday.

Haven't experienced this. The only issue I've ever had is with it not closing after getting on the road. I think this problem has resolved. I've never gotten out of the car and had it open, but people have mentioned it to me at stoplights.

Knew I should have waited a day to see if things clear up. That's right ..... the rear camera works just like normal today.

Hopefully just a skip with a glitch and this problem won't return.

Bringing this thread back up to pose a related question. Anyone else having an issue with the emblem not flipping up when in reverse. Does not happen all the time and nothing is stuck or jamming it. It's not happening often. I have not noticed a correlation to weather, temperature, etc. Maybe once a month or less.

I never took my 650i in to the dealer for this, since it only occurred two or three times. I don't think it's a defect, more of a me problem by sometimes getting out of sequence in gear selection. I had it happen again once a month or so ago, ignored it an the next time it worked like normal.

As cool at the motorized camera is, I think it's a unnecessary feature that is something that can go wrong. Every other car made gets by with a fixed rearview cam. And it cost us a power trunk !!

But where would the camera be if it were fixed? The rear looks really clean right now, not sure how good it would look with a camera showing.

Well, no other BMW model has the motorized camera, and they look fine, as do Benz, Porsche, Jag ( and everyone else) Current rear cams are so small they are easy to hide.

The 6 series doesn't have a lip high enough like the other cars have. You can maybe hide it near the license plate, but would probably be too low.

My point is ALL other automakers make their rearview cameras work without resorting to a complex motorized system. Design in how the camera is angled & field of view do the job.

They did the same thing with the s class coupe, probably because it didn't have a lip high enough either.

Ok, that's 2 cars out of a hundred + models. Still say it could be a fixed cam if BMW wanted to do it. I believe they decided on the motorized cam for the James Bond effect.

My motor went out after a four months use (Camera was OK.) Had to get a new part from Germany & then dealer needed the car overnight for reprogramming!

I had added one to my e64 6er at the plate level - it was very low. Still served the purpose, but didn't give a good perspective of items close to the back of the car.

Would think the gearing would be hanging up on something or possibly needs to adjusted or realigned.

Do you ever figure out how to solve this? I went to the dealer and told me they need $2000 to replace the whole unit.

My car's camera works fine. But the logo won't close when I drive on road. Anyone has any idea how to fix this? Or how do I disassemble the whole unit to see if there is anything jammed the camera?

Sounds like a motor issue or dirty, I am not sure what other models use the roundel lift for the camera, might be worth checking?? Just had a thought try opening the boot using the roundel to unlock, don't use key fob!! If the roundel moves easily or is stuck either way you may dislodge a problem???

Just looking at some pictures of brand new BMWs, stored in a field in Canada due to a recall programme by the Canadian Department of Transport. Apparently some 3000 cars yes 3000 ! where imported into Canada during a major storm in 2015 at the port of entry!.Port of Halifax! They considered the cars dangerous for various reasons due to contamination of components by standing water etc.
I have never ever heard of anywhere were a Transport authority did such a thing on a grand scale for all the rights reasons, good on them I say!!!
Outside of highlighting this, in the pictures there are a number of 6 series cars, M6's etc and each one as it is parked has the roundel standing open, I find this very weird, given that many have been parked there for all these years, but more importantly the fact that the roundel did not close when the cars where switched off and parked, clearly the last thing they did was to put them in reverse hence them being up and open.
This leads me to ask is there a design issue ???? Thoughts anyone!!

To see it happen to two brand new cars, side by side, it leads me to believe its either the environmental condition OR the method they used to park and leave the cars there.
