Do I have leather or leatherette seats?

Dear Experts,

This probably sounds noob(ish) but I really cannot figure out what type of seat do I have in my 2013 X1.
I've bought it in January, and I would like to take good care of it, including seats. I was about the order some conditioner, but went on some site for reviews and tips. And I got a little confused about the leather vs leatherette vs Dakota leather stuff, and weather or not I need to apply now and then conditioner.

I looked up in a VIN decoder (http://bimmer.work), but I didn't get any further. I got:
255 Sports Leather Steering Wheel
481 Sport Seats F Driver/front Passenger
So I guess the steering wheel is for sure leather, but I am still not sure about the seats.

I am uploading couple of pictures...

First, about the front seats...

Bimmerfest has been very slow tonight for me, so couldn't get a look at all the pics, but the seats look like leather, and the armrest looks like leatherette.
I think your seats would look like the armrest if they were leatherette too.
However, sport seats without leather might still have the red stitching, not 100% sure.
Do you have option LUG9?
I think that is the Sport Line leather seat option.

Agreed it looks like LUG9. If you do a google search for "2013 BMW X1 brochure" you can find a lot of information on the color combinations/options/packages for these cars.

For example:

LUG9 Black Nevada Leather with
Gray/Red piping

There's no need to guess and study pictures to determine what upholstery option your BMW has...it should be right there on the VIN decode list. What do you see written next to upholstery on the website you used? It should be listed near the bottom of the top portion of the decoded VIN info...right below the exterior color option code.

I went to the site you used and entered the last 7 digits of my X5's VIN as an example. In the pic below, you can see (circled in red at the bottom) that under upholstery it has listed and it gives me the type of material (leder/leather), the type of leather ("Dakota" or "Nevada" or "Nappa" or other grade of leather, the color (schwarz aka BLACK), and the BMW option code for the leather (type & colour):
  • Leder Dakota/schwarz LCSW (German)
  • Leather Dakota/black LCSW (English translation)

OK, but what does it say if you have leatherette vs leather ? I think that's where the confusion is. I can see yours says leather dakota, but is that REAL animal leather or is that the vegan-brand leatherette ?

Just like in English...we don't use the word "leather" when we are speaking or referring to "leatherette". We use two different words to distinguish between the two types of fabrics.

The same thing is in play in German...LEDER is what is used if you have leather. Currently, the name of the imitation leather (aka "leatherette") that BMW uses is called SENSATEC. I'm pretty sure that is what you'll see listed next to UPHOLSTRY in the VIN decoder sites.

There's also another way to tell...and that is the corresponding BMW "code" for the fabric used. The NEVADA leather codes all start with LU_ _ followed by the 2 digit color code. If you have Sensatic (aka leatherette)...the code for that fabric is KC_ _...which will also be followed by its 2 digit color code. In the markets that have cloth , cloth/leather combo, or other fabric seat options...then there are specific codes for those fabric combinations and their color code.

The parts database sites like realoem.com, bmwfans.info, and bimmercat.com...again prove their invaluable worth in being able to quickly find clarifying or verifying information. A quick search in the SEAT diagrams...you can see the list of seat fabrics and their color codes...it verifies that real leather will have an upholstry code that starts with LU & the SENSATIC (imitation leather...aka leatherette) has an upholstry code that starts with KC...see the list below taken from the www.bimmercat.com website:

FYI...I'm going to attempt a search for an e84 X1 that has the Sensatic interior and run it through a VIN decoder to see if my assumption is correct that "SENSATIC" is what is used to reveal what is listed next to upholstry if that is how the car is optioned.

EDIT:. Found an e84 X1 that had SENSATEC interior...and just as assumed...that is what is listed for UPHOLSTRY (I had to use the bimmercat.com VIN decoder because the bimmer.work site wouldn't load)...but you can see clearly that it says SENSATEC:

OK, this is what I was wondering. Looking at the options in my BMW owner's page:

Sensatec/black KCSW

Just so happened to run across a G01 X3 that has leatherette upholstry...so I decoded the VIN to see what it says...you can see in the pic below that LEATHERETTE appears as leatherette (not leder) in the VIN decode:

Interesting ! In my account on BMW's manufacture website, it doesn't say "leatherette" anywhere. I did however find: Sensatec/black KCSW
Interesting that BMW themselves doesn't seem to reference the term "leatherette", yet it is findable elsewhere.

Are you doing a narrow search only for the e84 X1? I say that because not all BMW models get the same seat fabrics.

The BMW model that I found with leatherette (BMW option code K8) was an G01 X3...when I go to the BMW information for that model...I see Leatherette...as well as some other leathers that I didn't see offered on the X1...like Vernasca & Merino leathers (which are a higher grade leather than Dakota and Nevada leathers. And instead of Sensatec (BMW option code KC) for the non-leather option...they get Leatherette. You can see the fabric options (again using one of the online part databases) where a G01 X3 was used as an example. Sometimes the scope needs to be broadened to include other models (in case you were focusing only on the X1).
