AT&T - BMW Connected Drive Hotspot vs Verizon Mobile Hotspot

Did a search but didn't find the kind of detail I am looking for.

My Verizon mobile hotspot has two issues: incoming phone calls knock me off; can't do car play and hotspot at the same time.

Does the AT&T - BMW Connected Drive Hotspot have the same issues?

W/ Verizon, the least expensive way to get mobile hotspot is to bundle w/ their Go Unlimited plan. That gives me a form of unlimited data which I am paying for and don't really need. I want the mobile hotspot feature (for the grandchildren and other people in the car) but don't really need unlimited data. 2 GB/month does me fine most of the time.

So bottom line, if the AT&T - BMW Connected Drive Hotspot does not have the issues I mentioned above, I'll jump to AT&T and add something like a 2 GB/month data plan and be done w/ it. Bundling that w/ my DIRECTV satellite TV should net me a discount.

AT&T BMW Hotspot comes with a 3 month trial. I would recommend trying it out.

I assume your Verizon Hotspot is via your iPhone and not a separate device?

Since BMW CarPlay is wireless your phone can't be connected to the AT&T Hot Spot and BMW CarPlay at the same time (the phone WiFi connection is used to drive the display for CarPlay since BlueTooth lacks the bandwidth needed).

No, the AT&T BMW Hotspot wouldn't get knocked off with incoming phone calls as those would come into your phone. You're losing hotspot on your Verizon phone due to Verizon network configuration. I don't lose my T-Mobile Hotspot during phone calls on my iPhone.

Any posters w/ experience using BMW/AT&T Connected Drive Hotspot?

I'm starting my 3 month/3 GB free trial. Something I did not recognize until now is that w/ the in-car hotspot I get a unique cell phone number for mobile phone use in the car. I need a second cell phone number for mobile phone use everywhere else which may very well be my existing cell phone plan.

What do people do in this case? Am I missing something? Surely, you don't carry 2 different cell phone numbers. one for in-car and the other for everywhere else. What are my options? Change my existing cell phone number to the in-car cell phone number, if possible. Help me out here.

The phone number is likely due to the way AT&T systems work more than anything else. I don't think you'll be able to receive calls on the number. Similar to what you'd get on an iPad with amnestying AT&T data plan...

But since you're on the trial you can call the number and report back how it works.

My car received incoming phone calls. I received two from BMW Connected. The system uses a cellular radio on AT&T service (at least, that is the carrier my car has), and so requires a phone number to be addressed. You can also use it to call for service, help, etc. through Connected.

The in-car WiFi is optimized for a car. We have it and like it - $20/month for unlimited data is a great deal (note: our normal phone plan is 22GB/month shared by three devices).

Long story short, to answer your question, everything works great -- CarPlay works properly (instead of the retarded highlighted-in-blue time noting hotspot/data active).

Downsides - it's slower (not sure if it's heat-related, more limited data bands than my phone, or optimized for car speeds without risk of dropping data).
(My phone get over 150Mbps, whereas the car maxes out at 20Mbps - rarely. Most of the time each device gets about 7-10Mbps)

But this is a key thing - while it's "slower", it's actually a "cleaner" connection. We connect our PHONES to the car over wifi (see: above, unlimited car data), and AT&T WiFi [calling] works great.

On our other car with it (Honda Odyssey), we can literally go 20-40 feet away from the car and it still works. We were at a vacation house and I couldn't figure out why the home internet was so slow. Reason? My phone was connected to the car, at the end of the driveway...
