Since 2007, Draftmaster by ATOC

In 2011 a tornado (Ringgold, Ga. 27 April 2011) dumped our motel roof on our VW, the rack, Milady Wife’s Bike Friday Air Glide and my Greenspeed trike. The VW and my trike were totaled. We bought the VW back and restored it to be sold after we bought the X5.

Here is the rack earlier this year with her Greenspeed on the right and my ICE on the left. I have since rebuilt it to properly fit the X5 Class-III receiver and take the lean and wobble out of it. It lowers away from the liftgate. If the liftgate touches the rack it is gentle enough not to mar the paint.

If I went and looked in my contacts file I could find the rocket-scientist engineer that designed, builds and sells them. He is very attentive to his customers needs and we have known him since before his business as a touring cyclist.

Trailer hitch or roof or straps on back?

If trailer hitch find a used Yakima or Thule on Craigslist. The yakima holds the bike by the top tube and straps. Perfectly fine for steel or aluminum frame bikes. Get the model that swings down so you can open the hatch while rack is in place. You can get locks to keep bikes secure, relatively speaking.

I upgraded to the Kuat when I got carbon frame bikes. It is more of a platform rack with wheels resting on a tray and an arm that holds the bike in place. Comes with locks. Not a budget option though...

Perhaps not that helpful to you as it is only 2 bikes total, but I have the BMW one that goes in the tow hooks. Great integration and easy to use. Has security locks. I cram my kids' bikes in the cargo while ours are on it.

A few years from now their bikes will get too big (I take their front wheels off as it is) and I'll need a new solution. If my kids are still talking to me.

Skiing.

Its the one sport where kids will still go with you, even if they are 25.

As long as you're paying....

Consider a Stealth Hitch https://stealthhitches.com/
Stealth Hitches are completely hidden behind the bumper. Rack receiver is inserted and removed easily and when when in use the aesthetic beauty of your vehicle remains!

I wanted the same but was a lot of $$$ from our dealer. They game a demo X5 that had it installed to try out on a trip. It is definitely smart in the sense that you maintain full trunk functionality (can open top and bottom hatches with the rack in place).

In the end, it was just too much money and I could not justify it while having land cruiser with a hitch and yakima rack...

+1 on the Kuat. I just picked up a used Kuat NV for a great price. And I'm VERY impressed with their customer service. I inquired about a few replacement parts (for purely cosmetic reasons) and they gave me a 30% off coupon and are throwing in a new set of decals at no charge. The rack is rock-solid in the OE hitch that I installed a couple weeks ago.

The only downside for me is that somebody posted a NIB Thule T2 Pro XT for $400 on Facebook marketplace two days after I bought the Kuat. For me it was essentially a coin-flip between the two.

I've seen a lot of people who really like the 1UP racks, but the security seems to be lacking compared to the Kuat and Thule racks.
