G30 (2017 - Current)
The next generation 5 Series, chassis code G30, arrives at dealers in February 2017. Looking like a scaled down 7 Series and riding on the CLAR platform, the new 5 Series will have a focus on lightweight and sporty performance. Engines options will come from BMW's new B family for the 530 and 540 and a turbocharged V8 for the M550i. Read more about the 2017 5 Series

Next Generation All Digital Dash?

BMW seems to be moving quickly with new full digital displays.

Never know, guess it could happen sooner vs later. After all, the current G30 has both the hybrid and new full digital display.

That shape looks very similar to the Tesla screens. I wonder if they share the same display type.

Of course will wait to see it in person, but not loving the weird, non-circular shape of the main gauges. Nope. Strange is not always better. While I'm not against digital, we aren't driving video games.

The G30 hybrid dash is bad enough, with the center display stealing the tachometer. Some of us still want to see the basic speed and RPM readouts clearly when we drive. Next, some of you will be saying who needs a tach anyway -- wait and see.

This reminds me of the protracted debates we had about hybrid dash versus full digital dash, in which several people just gave up and said who needs dashes anyway when we can get HUD. It seemed that HUD was the answer to every dash debacle.

I have had HUD continuously since 2004, but it's nearly always turned off. I enable HUD only in combination with navigation. Why? Because I actually find conventional cluster gauges to be more aesthetically pleasing, which in turn enhances my driving excitement. (Did I just steal a marketing slogan from BMW?)

Regarding this new fancy re-imagining of the all digital dash, I think there's a big difference between "concept" design and actual final-production design. The final-production design, I expect, will be much less of a video game.

+1, I love the digital dash on my new 540 but this look isnít doing it for me. As you say, maybe better in person actually driving but Iím not drooling for it now.

+1. There's something iconic about round BMW gauges with red lighting. They can go digital, but I wish they wouldn't mess with the fundamentals of the interface.

That could be kind of cool but I'm not sure I would like it. Time will tell.

This new digital display (planned to arrive with the new 3-series) somehow totally weird for me for a 5-series BMW. This car is much more adult to implement this design. The current full-digital one fit me much better.

Larger screen doesn't necessarily mean better. Just because Audi and Mercedes have massive confusing displays which show pointless information doesn't mean it's the best or right way to approach user interfaces, even if it does look cool

A leader stands alone. I'd hope BMW resists change for the sake of change and maintains their focus on human centric design/ergonomics rather than just making something look flashy for poseurs who want to show off that they can afford to upgrade from their volkswagens.

That was my first thought as well. Overall, I love the concept but keep the speedo and tach circular and front and centre where they belong. Otherwise, good stuff.

With the HUD I find I rarely look at the cockpit cluster, maybe the tach but thats not often. Great having my speed vs posted limits right in front of me at all times. So easy with these cars to quickly find yourself going well over the limit

Reminds me of what the FAA thought was a good idea for us controllers. They wanted to replace one radar repeater and few rows of strips with 4 TV's of useless information. Thy thought we needed to know when a flight was proposed, when it taxied, when it reached the runway, when it was rolling and when it was airborne. All we really cared about was when they called us airborne! After millions and millions of wasted dollars they finally figured out it was a waste of money and provided no benefit to controllers.

Now that it's fully digital, they should make it changeable (skins) just like you can change the interior lighting color. 'Classic', 'Modern', etc. Heck, they could even sell additional ones like '///M Sport' for $100 a piece in true BMW form as options to make some more money, even from subsequent owners.

It's not like it's a hard/new concept for software (see Winamp skins from 2 decades ago).

"A leader stands alone" ?? Try "Resistance is futile" instead. Sucks to hear technology challenges you, but you will have to learn to live with it. Its coming your way whether you like it or not.

What exactly confuses you lets say in Audi gauges anyways? They are very informative and configurable. You don't like some content, you don't invoke it. Simple as that. Yeah, sure they are LCDs and as such they display digital content. Is that whats confusing and flashy to you? Digital needle VS mechanical needle ? Map in the gauges VS map in the center of your dash ?

You're preaching the same boring song. Tech for sake of tech doesn't serve the purpose bla bla bla. This is NOT tech for tech or tech for show off. This is how YOU perceive that new technology though. I, on the other hand, see it as tech for convenience (ease of information access). Tech can be gracefully implemented without information overload. That's what Audi did (and others too). Current BMW gauges look primitive in comparison.

To your point though, yes, I still see people waiting to deposit a check with a teller as opposed to using their phone or a "confusing" ATM.

Technology does not challenge me, I am a data engineer specializing in cloud architecture and predictive analytics.

BMW's heads up display shows me everything that is relevant when i'm driving. Audi's virtual cockpit shows more information, none of which is important and its a distraction from the road. I've had these pieces of trash as rentals a few times and can't stand them.

Tech can be gracefully implemented without info overload...see the G30 5 series.

I don't really care what they do with the dash. The steering wheel cuts right through the middle of it all for me. I just use the HUD and all is well - I'm good with keeping it simple.
