G30 (2017 - Current)
The next generation 5 Series, chassis code G30, arrives at dealers in February 2017. Looking like a scaled down 7 Series and riding on the CLAR platform, the new 5 Series will have a focus on lightweight and sporty performance. Engines options will come from BMW's new B family for the 530 and 540 and a turbocharged V8 for the M550i. Read more about the 2017 5 Series

Found the nav issue out, what you said. I never put destinations into the Connect's app but apparently my car does. Erased them and it's been better. Wonder if I can stop the syncing. Thanks!

You can't assign a button for CarPlay, or at least I can't figure it out. That would be fantastic! I have buttons for interior lighting and HUD, great feature to have these buttons. And the contacts are checked when I set up the phone and then at times disappear. It's weird. Thanks though.

Did it again today and I just reset up the phone yesterday for CarPlay.

I'm not sure if you can stop the synching or not. I finally logged out of the App as is seemed to always be wanting to tell me something. I'm one of those people who can make technology work through persistence and a sheer force of will. But it does not come naturally too me. But I would be comfortable rebuilding an engine. Yes, I'm old!

Actually yes, I thought I was having deja vu here. I already said this way back in post 15.

If anyone cares to do so, I did find out that you CAN set a "radio" hard button for the screen right before CarPlay, saves a couple of steps... l

And I don't have Carplay, so this is a legit question: Can't you just assign one of your preset buttons to pull it up? Rather than have 500 buttons in the interior, I much prefer BMW's approach. I have preset buttons set for:
  • Favorite FM station
  • Favorite AM News station
  • Read text messages to me
  • Activate Comfort Ventilation
  • Toggle HUD on/off
  • Toiggle iDrive screen on / off

Pretty much everything else in the car I access via voice commands. In fact, couldn't you just access CapPlay via voice command?
I would love to know how you get your car to read text messages to you. Seriously, how do you get that to work?

I can do it with Apple iOS: "hey siri" "read me the last text message"

It can also send messages on just voice.

I can get Siri to read my text messages with a long push on the Voice button. Same for sending texts. However, I'm looking to enable the feature through iDrive so I get notified in the HUD when a new message comes in. My car did this for the first month I used it and then stopped and I have never been able to get it back. BMW Geniuses have no clue.

Sorry Doug but I don't understand what you posted.

A copy from my owners manual that enabled my text messages to be read aloud.

You need to decide if you are using CArPlay for phone and text or BMW drive. There is a setting for that. You cannot have both active. If you set up the phone and BMW app then new text show in notifications and if set up the phone to use CarPlay they do not show in the BMW notifications rather in CarPlay. If you have CarPlay activated you can chooses to use BMW Nav and also the audio etc. CarPlay will be the default for contacts, text phone etc.

Well, I don't have CarPlay. I just want to be notified in iDrive when a new message arrives.

Where is that setting? I used to get text message notifications in iDrive from my iPhone 7, but since I upgraded to an iPhone XS, no text message notifications show up in iDrive ever.

My two cents:

- I've had a lot of BMWs. Some were dead solid perfect. Others were maintenance nightmares. It's a crapshoot. It's a love/hate thing for me.
- I've had a couple of Audis. One was fine, the other one had constant electrical issues including frequently crashing infotainment garbage. And often the car would not recognize the fob (either of them) and not start. Dealer said "it starts when I try it" and had no solution or even tried to investigate it.
- Recently, one of my BMWs (M2) had iDrive issues. It took four service visits and BMW corporate to get the iDrive unit replaced. That broke other things (installation error) but now all is well.
- When going through the aforementioned issues, the dealer service advisor said that they have problems with iPhones. I have Android phones (but it's a note for you Apple people).
- The BMW connected drive app sucks and I have uninstalled it to avoid issues.
- I don't use anything more sophisticated than BT, and only rarely do I have to reinitialize it.

Thanks, LA, I'll give that a try and see if it works in my car now.

It isn't there. There is no "Show Notifications" to turn on. That's the first suggestion everyone makes.

I'll have to research Doug's post to figure out what's going on there.

Lemme guess Android? If so donít comment on usable tech. Android phones are a 15 year old public beta.

Agreed, the iPhone integration is terrible. Bluetooth works fine for phone calls but even something simple like playing music from iTunes through the USB gets all screwy and titles donít show up on the display properly and it seems to confuse the iDrive system. I gave up a long time ago even trying to get text messages or emails to display on the screen.Click image for larger version
