Possible water leakage into the trunk area, the area just behind the left rear wheel well, shorting out connectors at the amplifier which is housed there. Water entry might be via the rear light assembly.

What Wilt said this is a pretty common problem.
Also Trunk Lid or Sunroof Drains.
Best to establish which sound system you have this has
nothing to do with the Head Unit or Radio .
In the US in an 08 you are most likely to have the Hi Fi or Logic 7 system.
It could also be your TCU, Mulf or sat module if you have any of those
but the amp is most likely .

In my E46 I had intermittant sound come various audio sources, and then it went out completely finally. Due to an incomplete body weld after parking lot damage repair, water came in.

It required replacement of my amp, with accompanied necessary cleaning of various additional connection points.
The dash unit fully illuminated, just no tunes coming out.

You said, " now im not hearing the ding noise", an indicator.

Actually, if the radio head unit control panel lights, and you can select Audio inputs, your "radio & cd player" are probably still working fine, and the problem is with the amplifer fuse, wiring, or the amp itself, IN THE TRUNK. The speakers are connected to the Amp in the boot, so that's what you need to test/examine per steps below.

I don't know which audio system you have, but you should check the online VIN decoder & see what option numbers are shown for radio & speaker system (amp). For example, my 2007 E91 has S663 BMW Professional "Head Unit" or pre-amp. and S676 HiFi Speaker System (10 speakers). If you have the same system, the following apply:

1) Your head unit (a pre-amp which can select/obtain signals from different inputs such as radio, CD, USB, Aux) or radio display panel and controls are powered by fuse F14 (15A) per this circuit diagram:
https://www.newtis.info/tisv2/a/en/e...4-fuse/ievS4lR
If your control panel lights, and you can select different inputs with the "Audio" button, then that fuse is OK.

2) Your head unit or pre-amp sends four different channel signals to the Amplifier located in the trunk (you don't say if you have E90, E92, etc. so I just chose the E90 chassis), and the speakers are connected to that amplifier. If the amplifier does NOT get power from fuse F15 (20A), then there is NO sound from the speakers, even though the radio unit (N9 in the schematics) has power and is sending signals to the amplifier (A18). So recheck F15. Here is a circuit diagram of Power in via F15, and signal out to the speakers:
https://www.newtis.info/tisv2/a/en/e...system/kYBGuXG

If fuse F15 is OK, and you have 12V+ at the Red/Gray wire, pin #5 of connector X10266 at the amplifier (disconnect connector from amp, check for corrosion and test for voltage at that pin #5 AND also check for continuity to ground at pin #26, Brown wire), and still no sound after cleaning the amp pins and connector pins, then you have a problem with the amp.

For those not familiar with TIS circuit diagrams, they are interactive/hyperlinked and you can click on a BLUE component number such as X10266 for the Amplifier Connector, and get an Installation Location, Connector View, or other information on the component, navigate to the fuse diagram, etc.

Please let us know what you find,
George

update. FIXED!!!

So i never did figure out what was wrong with the radio i think it just stopped for some reason i checked the fuses and the amp in the back and nothing was wrong there. but i found a 07 bmw 325i someone was parting out and i got the radio out of it for $30 looks brand new and i just plugged it in and now its all working again so if you have the same problem just find a junk bmw and take the radio out of it. i called bmw and they said a new radio would be $1100 and i got one for $30 so don't pay the dealer for a new one its a waste of money it is so easy to uninstall the old one and reinstall the new one. If anyone has any questions just message me.
