The Z3s (at least my 2002) have a small microswitch mounted in the convertible top frame that shuts off the hydraulic pump when the top is almost fully seated. Don't know if Z4s have the same thing but suspect they might. Not uncommon for this switch to fail or the small wire pair to break. This causes the electric pump to not work. In the Z3, the wire is routed down the main structural member behind the driver's shoulder where the hydraulic ram connects. The usual repair is to just bypass this switch, since it really does nothing all that useful, in the well behind the driver's shoulder.
