2002 525i CODES

Last week my check engine light came on. There were two codes, which indicated running Lean in Bank 1 and Bank 2. I took it to the mechanic and he said I had a vacuum leak and fixed it. Now two days later the light comes back on and the codes are P0420 and P0430??? They weren't on before!!!! Did the mechanic do something to trigger them to come on? HELP!!!!

Those are for Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold. It could be bad post-cat O2 sensors, or worn-out cats.

The condition may have been caused by the lean running, which caused the cats to overheat. Doubtful that the repair was the cause.
