Nick, hope your family is safe. Did they evacuate? If not, I hope they get to a sturdy place to ride this out.

Hi Karl....glad to hear you are well. Are you still in that gorgeous apartment in Seattle (I see your car choices haven't changed any ) and working at your research?
Yes, the northeast quadrant of a hurricane usually spawns some F1 or F2 tornados. Peak activity for us comes tomorrow night after midnight so no worries tonight. Going to be a long night tomorrow night.

All the action is still a bit south of us. They've had a couple tornado warnings in Osceola and Brevard county but I'd guess we're a couple hours away still. Going to make my last WaWa run here shortly and then in for the duration.

A WaWa sandwich is the best comfort food possible. That, a generator, gas and beer should get you through the storm just fine. Please keep us posted after you are safe!

And, am I reading your avatar correctly...did you get a 2nd new BMW after Marie? Do tell (or point me to where, I am sure, you've described it during my absence)

We originally got Marie for Linda. She had a '64 MG Midget when we first met, but it was a garage queen most of the time as were most older English cars if you couldn't work on them yourself. I got it all fixed up mechanically, but that didn't resolve the aggravation of top up/down which was really a disassembly process so that the canvas and frame could be stuffed into the trunk. We sold it and she was happy with sun roof cars until Pontiac releases the Solstice. We looked at buying one, but she didn't like the seating position and blind spots (huge A pillars). Instead of buying new, we decided to look for a good used car for her to drive for a bit so she could remember the not so fun parts of a vert. After about 6 months she decided she was good with a soft top car so we picked up an '04 E46 Cabrio and I took over the E36. Two years ago we traded the E46 for a '11 E88. We're thinking about trading it for an i3 now....

Generator - Check! Propane powered so can just hook up a grill bottle and not get stuck not being able to buy gas.

Beer - Check! Got a few choice bottles, plus some wines we've been wanting to try.

Also have seasons 2-6 of GoT downloaded onto my tablet in case we lose power (TV).

Sounds like you are all set, Don, good luck! But an i3, c'mon man...those are the ugliest cars known to man. I actually drove a Ford hybrid last week...it didn't suck and went 80 like nuttin'. Just sayin'

I'm flying to ATL tonight and driving to Tallahassee. Was afraid I would not be able to get there otherwise. Given what I am seeing on the boating sites, there is 9-12 foot tidal surge on the keys. Hoping for the best, but fully prepared for the chance that my Dad's house will be destroyed. And his poor boat, he's worked on it for like 2 years...and although it's insured, he will certainly not get the value out of it. It was about a month away from being fully ready to make a run to the Leewards

But, things can be replaced. So, enjoy your adult beverages tonight.

And Ken, please keep us updated on how you are doing thru all of this....

Other than spending the last 5 hours fixing a plumbing problem, I'm doing fine. I won't be able to walk tomorrow, but we have water again.

I'm watching Irma closely. I usually trust the NWS and their storm track predictions, but this one has been just enough of a maverick to make me nervous. And I don't know if any of you recall me talking about my friend, the BMW guy who was the chief meterologist at the local NBC affiliate. He moved to the east coast of Florida a couple years ago, the Naples area. He used to be a storm chaser early in his career. I told him he didn't have to chase this one. It's coming to him! His two E30 M3s and his 95 E36 M3 are still in storage up here, so they are safe, but his E39 M5 is down there.

Will probably break that out when powers gone which will likely be soon. We had some flickers and just had about a 5 minute outage. Can hear the bangs from trees contacting the power lines.

Irma has gone much farther inland than they expected. I was just about sure it was going to hook another left and head into the Gulf. It still could!

I think they gave up on their models hours ago and now they're just plotting it's course. We should see the peak winds around 1:45 am. Power's been on and off every couple minutes.

Just said on the weather channel there are 390,000 people without power in your area, Don.

This has inspired me to drag out my 7550 watt generator and go through it. I don't believe it's been cranked in at least 11 years. If that goes well (carb clean-out, new battery and oil change) I'll drag out the REALLY old 5500 watt one. That one hasn't been cranked in 25 years!

That's why I have a propane powered unit.

If you can get a conversion kit it's definitely worth it. No fuel additive and no residual fuel so you just disconnect the tank and put it away. Also easier to get propane than gas if the area has no power.

Power went for good around 3 am. Still some impressive wind gusts but intensity seems lowered. Under hurricane warning still until 11 am.

Got a quick check outside. Trees in the front are down but away from the house. Looks like only damage is a few lost shingles from a ridge cap.

Glad to see, Don, that you and yours escaped without much damaged.

My Dad's house and boat are fine, save a broken water main (that only put more water into an already soaked landscape). Although the drive from Tallahassee to Tampa was more indicative...lots of trees down, 3/4 of the gas stations without gas, and at least 1/2 the towns without power. Gas and power will be the main hindrances to a full recovery...though the Keys are a mess.

Hoping our OT friends in SC/NC and the midwest fare as well!

Glad to hear that you're safe and sound, Don. I suspect it's going to be a long while before electricity is restored given the amount of power line damage across the state, but at least you didn't experience any flooding or worse.

We got power and net back this morning so we're pretty much recovered WRT necessities. I spoke with some of the folks from our St. Pete facility today and from what they indicated we got more storm than they did. Tree guys are here now to take care of the last of my casualties so once that's done, repairing the sprinkler system that got ripped out by the tree roots and replacing the shingles on the ridge cap on the roof will get us pretty near 100%. Still no power at the office today, but power company thinks they may get us back on line tonight.

Yeah, will be some extended times for some people. Just depends on how much infrastructure needs to be replaced to get them connected again. Local power companies are saying could be 2-3 weeks for some.
