Newbie going to look at a '15 X1 35i tomorrow

Like the title says, I'm going to look at a used 2015 X1 xdrive35i M Sport tomorrow. Car has just shy of 20K on the clock.

What should I look/look out for?

Thanks, YLT.

This search: https://www.bmwusa.com/safety-recalls.html says "no open recalls for your vehicle", so that's good.

Is it a CPO or from a private seller or...? Carfax available (probably worth it)? Number of ownners, service records, look for little dings, leaks, odors, etc. Take your time -- don't be ruched -- and check everything top to bottom, make sure everything operates as it should. If a CPO, you should get two keys, otherwise might just be one. Check how much wear is on the tires.

Thanks, TK! Not CPO, but purchasing from a dealer. 1 owner, leased vehicle. Clean Carfax.

I was just wondering if there was anything specific to look out for on these vehicles, or the N55 powertrain, that was unique.

I would look for what packages it came with. Hopefully it is loaded. In any case, a 35i is a rare find, especially with only 20k miles! I would definitely jump on that!

Thanks, Mishmosh.

It's an M Sport with the 18" wheels and sunroof. I think all of the stuff like HK stereo and drivers assist all come as standard on the M Sport, right?

M Sport adds sport seats, shifting paddles and some cosmetic touches. The HK is separate. Then I think there is a premium package and tech package.

Gotcha. Well, it definitely had the HK stereo and the drivers assist (front/rear sensors, back up camera).

Is there a website that will decode the VIN to show all the options?

e84 x1 was a pretty simple order, especially for the xdrive35i. At that level, pretty much only options for a smart buyer would have been mSport/Sport/xline, ultimate package (premium/tech/drivers assistance combined), cold weather, HK, and 19 inch wheels. Personally, I'd avoid the 19 inchers if you want to daily drive it. Sounds like a good find, but I'm pretty wary to buy a non-cpo BMW. Still, if BMW ever worked the bugs out of a platform, it would be a '15 e84 x1, given it's age.

I have a 2014 X1 xdrive35i M sport and absolutely love it! I test drove an M240i yesterday for fun (not planning to trade in the X1 any time soon) and although that was very impressive I wasn't disappointed to get back into the X1 for a spirited drive home. It's an amazing driving machine, especially considering its utility for carrying small loads, driving in snow, etc. Mine has all the bells and whistles, and aside from the obvious niceties (sun roof, HK stereo, backup cam and parking beepers) it keeps impressing me with obscure things I never would have ordered for myself (eg, i recently noticed that the headlights aim in the direction you're turning at low speeds), but the things about the M-sport I appreciate most are the combination of the seat (properly adjusted with side bolsters tightened up) and M-steering wheel, which together make for a fantastic driving experience.
Edit: My 2014 has an air bag recall which they're ordering in for me right now. I have the 19 inch asymmetric wheels, and while I agree that symmetric 18-inchers are the sensible way to go, I am thoroughly pleased with how well mine drives. I did compromise by putting all season non-run flats on it. I have AAA and carry a repair kit just in case...

That's encouraging, Dave. How many miles on your '14 X1?

Kommissar - I hear you, but the current CPO only adds one year to the warranty, right? Not that big of a deal, IMO.

28K. Another thing worth passing on is that I just extended my original warranty (you've probably got another year on yours) and the financial person I worked with at my local dealership let me in on the secret that if you buy at the end of the month they have more leeway to drop the price. I extended for another 5 years and up to 100K mi (I drive less than 10K per year), for $2,985. Our dealership uses a 3rd party insurer that offers the same coverage as BMW (exclusionary with disappearing $100 deductible).
It seems to me that if a car has been continuously covered by warranty since new and you extend it you can pretty well rest assured you'll be OK.

You are going to love it. Mine is older, 2013 but only with 35k miles. Got it when it has 30k in March of this year. Comfort Access is another great option that I hope you get. I got all option aside from the HK.

First things I did after I got the car is:
  1. Get an extended warranty. I got mine until 2020 or 100k miles. My original warranty expired in April.
  2. Bought an OBDC BT adapter and a Carly App for some minor coding.
  3. Went for Combox recall.
  4. Found a reasonable shop to get it wrapped.
I'm planning to switch to non-RFT when its finally time to change the tires.
I'm almost due to change the rear brake pads.
And I need to change my wiper blades.

For your car, maybe you can:
  1. Check tire thread wear.
  2. Check brake pad wear.
  3. Check if you are included in the Combox recall.

There's really nothing else I can think of. Haven't had any issue so far (knock on wood).
Goodluck!

I had a 15 x1 35i w/ HiFi, Premium + Cold weather package. Now (other one was totaled) have a 14 X1 35i Sportline w/ Ultimate, Cold weather, HK audio. Neither disappointed (especially after adding a JB4), but the Sportline seats are a nice upgrade as is the tech package for the full bluetooth streaming profiles and backup camera. I didn't get to compare HiFi vs HK directly but both sound great. I'm looking to change the downpipe and add an OCC when I get a chance. I've put 14k miles on since I got the 2014 in June.

Both were eligible for the Combox upgrade @ no charge, but from what I was told by my dealership the free upgrade period is now over (I think it ended in September or October) regardless of eligibility.

Paperwork signed, I pick it up on Sat after they touch up some minor scratches in the paint.

I *think* it's the M Sport with the "Ultimate" package? It has heated seats, back up camera and sensors, nav, panoramic roof, HK stereo. I bought it from a Cadillac dealer, so they're not up to speed on the BMW options packages.

Congrats! Post pictures when you get the chance and enjoy!

Yes, the new CPO program is less attractive than the past- I have two years 50k miles of additional coverage, which was on top of the three years left on the original warranty on my 2015. That was worth something to me. With the new 1 yr unlimited miles- I'm honestly not sure I'll buy another used BMW. I'm more likely to lease or MAYBE buy a loaner. And certainly, buying a clean car from a non-BMW dealer is more attractive now too, as I doubt CPO prices dropped much.

Also, as far as the ultimate goes, it was possible to get the nav without the backup camera or the premium package, but once you wanted two of three, it was usually cheaper to order all three in form of the ultimate package. Still, I've seem some ordered poorly that have two parts, but are missing premium or the back up camera. If you have backup and nav, look to see if you have the autodimming center mirror and fold-able side mirrors. If you do, you have then Ultimate package.

Got that right wrt the so-called extended warranty. BMW wanted to match Mercedes instead of staying within reason and recognizing that most people don't drive 30k miles per year and are more interested in extended years of coverage than mileage. With our X1 and X3 both expiring in 2019-2020, this may sadly be the end, as well. Maybe a used Lamborghini Urus will be affordable with an extended warranty by then! LOL

Mine has the ultimate package, including folding mirrors and the rest of the works. A ridiculous amount of extras considering the price of the vehicle.
The one last piece of advice I have is to give it a good hard test drive. And if it seems to hesitate on acceleration more so than turbo lag would explain, try the TBA reset. I find that using the shifter to manually change gears (in sport mode) really helps with the sense of power and readiness to take off like a shot at any moment (paddle shifters are hard to use when turning aggressively). I just can't get over how fun it is to drive like hell in this thing!

Got her home through all the snow and rain from DC to Charlotte yesterday. Loved the drive, 400 miles of testing and familiarization. Wife loves it, too.

Need to get a wash and fill up today. I'm back in DC for work starting Monday but I'll get with the local dealer to get a service history soon.

Gotta get rid of that stupid front plate bracket ASAP.

Ack, Hooligan...nice grab. That is EXACTLY the car I am starting to look for (right down to the color choices). My 2001 e46 325it Sport Manual is getting long in the tooth.

If you want to sell (or if anyone in BF.c land sees another one just like this, please drop me a line.

Congrats!!!
