Commuters - Specific Mileage Question

I'm toying with getting back into an E39 (owned 2 540i/6s before) but this time I'm looking at the baby engines. I now commute 100+ miles per day round trip, about 80 of which are stop and go no more than 20 MPH for the most part. So, gas is now a consideration.

Those of you with 528s in particular who have similar commute settings, what kind of mileage do you see real world?

Auto and manual welcome to respond as I'll probably buy whichever car is the best value regardless of transmission.
Thanks!!!

For a 530, that kind of stop-and-go traffic traffic yields betwen 18-20 mpg. Sometimes lower in the winter. A 528 might be very close to these numbers.

Get a Pious. You can hit 35-40 MPG in traffic.

Not a chance on a Prius. Gotta have something still reasonably fun. Plus, theyre overpriced in the market and batteries will be coming due soon on many used ones. The E39 will still be fun to drive and the interior is a nice place to be for a few hours each day, neither of which are true about Piouses.

I'm getting 23 in the Mercedes so as long as its close to that I'll be happy. I just don't want to start seeing teens.

I get 23-24 mpg in a mixed commuted with my 528...it gets up to 30-31 when on cruise control on a flat highway. The 530 gets 21-22 in a mixed commute but I get on the accelerator a little harder in that one...just because I can. Notice a real difference in both mileage and performance when the air filters are clean...seems like a no brainer but we often forget these engines love clean air.

I average about 7.4km's to the L in my commute. That might be a bit different to your type of driving as it's mainly sitting in lines at traffic lights then mashing the loud peddle to get through orange lights (here orange means another 4 cars can go through, red means only 2 ). Lucky for me my office is only about 10km from where I live.

I've switched gas stations and it's not paying….I'm only getting 15mpg in city driving, never over 60kph and average speed 30kph. With Shell V-power 10% ethanol I get 19mpg, highway I get 29mpg but that's as good as it gets with my car; just did the CCV, new fuel filter, VANOS. In good mixed conditions (no stop and go, just city) I had it around 22mpg.

The 540 is bad in stop and go but better or very close on highways.

I would absolutely get the 530 if I had to do it again, because it's got something like 30 more hp and is only very slightly more thirsty.

In my 540 6spd i was getting 18 mpg, mixed 50/50 city/highway, after i did all my maintenance and repairs (plugs, boots, all intake gasket/seals and soaked/flushed my intake manifold) Now I'm getting 21.5mpg. Ive been through about 5 tanks and been getting the same readings.

My advice to you would be to carry your tools and an extra radiator and expansion tank and a gallon of coolant and a gallon of distilled water in the trunk and get ready to have FUN!

There's no fun in commuting 4 hours a day in stop-and-go traffic, BMW or not. Move closer to work or take transit.

My 528i automatic (five-speed) gets me 20-21 MPG during my mostly freeway, stop-and-go commute. It's a guzzler.

OK, so most people are getting above 20 average. That's not bad, I'll be keeping an eye out for some good E39s and may pull the trigger.

Empowah, I thought all 528 autos had the GM 4spd? No?

Even with my lead foot, I get anywhere from 21-24 mpg in the city.

I think the 2000s had a steptronic 5 speed. Otherwise it's a 4. On the plus side, the fluid is just Dexron.

If I drive to work (15min @ ~25mph average) I get ~22mpg in a 530 manual with no lead foot. I can't do it in the winter (freezing temperature) though since it's too short of a distance to warm the engine and in particularly the oil up.

Long distance @70mph cruise I get 32mpg.

Just wondering, anyone know definitively if the 5spd Step in the 6cyls is GM or ZF?

I believe all steps are ZF, but I am not sure if 528s had step.

Don't know if I've got a ZF or a GM tranny but definitely know my 528 has Steptronic. This one is a 2000 with 10/99 build date.
