2013 X1 xDrive28i - black smoke

All,
I am trying to help a friend with her car. My 1999 740i is not even remotely in the same league as her 2013 X1 as far as me knowing what might be going on with her car

She has intermittent black smoke coming from the exhaust. My first thought was oil seals in the turbo? Any chance that is common failure in the 28i? I am not very familiar with this family of motors.

The dealer is being shady (shocking, I know) and just charged her $2k to replace some oil lines to the turbo and said they are not covered by the emissions warranty. The warranty book lists "turbocharger" but not oil lines, so they may have that on a technicality, but I think the Great State of California would consider it differently. Either way, it didn't solve the issue. So I'm back to the turbo needs to be rebuilt or replaced.

Any thoughts or guidance to similar issues would be great. The search feature didn't turn up much in the X1 forum. What other models is this engine used in? I would guess the 328i is the same motor? What about X3? others?

Thanks!
Gentleman Jack

I think the n20 engine is used on 320, 328, and x1.

If her car is still under original warranty, maybe try a different bmw dealer?

That's really annoying the service she got. For $2k, I'd drive piss outta car and make it smoke more. I have one of those in a s28i which I really like.

Maybe it's the fuel injectors, o2 sensor, coils, etc. But nobody should have to pay BMW to hunt and spend. Thats no way to fix.

Black smoke is mostly over rich, while oil smoke is more bluish.

Have a 2013 x3 and had turbo replaced at 35k miles and now again at 84k miles. At 60k miles had black smoke and they replaced seals. What an unreliable vehicle! Be persistent!
