Those that tow . . .

When you tow with your X3 do you use manual or sport to shift?
Do you leave it in drive and go?

I have found that in the rolling hills of Missouri I have to use manual or it will constantly shift up and down between 5-6. I tend to leave it in 5th and if I hit a stretch that is flat I shift up to 6th and down again when going uphill.
I am towing a 12' trailer and my Polaris RZR S. I would guess about 2000-2500 pounds. Really whish we could get the diesel in the states in an X3 :-(

Anyone driven an X5d? Wondering if that should be my next pruchase.

Steve

My trailer is a small 4x6 utility trailer and my X3 is a stick so this whole issue is moot for me. But I have towed my share of heavy stuff in the past and the way you're doing it is spot on. Lugging is hard on the tranny and the engine.

I towed a 2700 pound (loaded) enclosed trailer from Georgia to Washington....a headwind and uphill worked the engine very hard. When the trailer is only loaded with my KX250F racebike and tools it pulls very well.

I pull a boat.

Around town, or in hilly areas I go manual. Out on the highway I stay auto.
