New X1 Oil Change?

My 2014 X1 is my first BMW and I'm not sure when I should be changing oils?

I know the car tells me when I need services but I saw many threads where people mention changing oil after breaking-in...

Can anyone shed some light on when to change oils? I've driven 2200mi and its a month now... Thanks

You can go to the F30 or E9x section and search to find these subjects; lots of controversy and many opinions.

Except for M cars, there is no "break-in" oil change. Do one if it makes you feel happy.
The Condition Based Service (CBS) built into the car will illuminate when you need an oil change; or you can use the turn signal stalk's menu tab or iDrive to discover when the next change is due. Probably it's at 15K-20K miles, but also BMW USA specifies yearly oil changes if the mileage doesn't happen.

Some people are changing the oil at 7500 mile intervals. Do so if it makes you happy. Be sure to use the correct oil (BMW LL-01, which is ACEA A3/B3-B4). An oil change on these cars costs around $70 just in oil and filter.

There is no evidence that changing at intervals other than the CBS contributes to engine failure.

@floydarogers Thanks for the info... I'd like to know if these optional oil changes are covered as part of the "$0 Maintenance" (50k mi all covered) program by BMW? (or they're only free when CBS prompts for it?)

I'm going to guess that they're only free when the vehicle prompts the service. If not, I'm getting my brake discs and pads done at 49k miles!

Nope. If the car doesn't say it's due or physical inspection by BMW service doesn't show the component is out of spec, it's on your dime.

If you're leasing the car, stick with their maintenance. If you plan on keeping the car for an extended time (5+ years, high mileage), I'd spend a little extra to ensure its maintained correctly for long life. A few hundred bucks on additional oil changes is well worth it over the long run in my opinion.

Regards,

No optional changes are covered, only the yearly or CBS. Often you can $79 specials at dealerships.

Yes. Castrol Professional SLX 5W-30 is the OEM oil. All this is in the user manual, including info on top-offs.

Thanks for the info. It's my wife's car and the manual is in it... Rather post here than try and remember to go find the manual and dig through it at night or on a weekend.

New X1 Oil Change?

Go to your profile on BMW and they give you a link to a PDF version of your manual. I have it saved to my phone for easy reference.
