Another Smog Thread

Forgive me, searching on my phone is a PITA and I don't recall if I've seen something quite this bad before.

Looked at a 325 over the weekend and it failed smog SPECTACULARLY. As in, well over the limit on each category at each engine speed. HC and NOx were almost double if I recall.

My question is, the O2 was reading about 3.5%. Am I correct in thinking the O2 is supposed to be 0 so perhaps it's just running horrifically rich from a failed O2?

I have a lousy picture of the smog report but I don't think it's legible, I'll upload if absolutely necessary.

Thanks guys.

Now that I'm on a real computer I'll just type out the numbers.

1500 RPM
CO2: 13.9%
O2: 3.6%
HC: max 83, meas 136
CO: max 8.56, meas 9.44
NOx: max 635, meas 1135

2500 RPM
CO2: 14.3%
O2: 3.5%
HC: max 50, meas 142
CO: max 8.47, meas 8.54
NOx: max 117, meas 1613

So, sir DF, does this look like a failing cat still?

Mine was failing only with NOx so I think my cats were too cold, or my mix is too lean. Had fair CO and O2.

ahem,.....no, i won't get over it!!!

so there....

yeah, it looks as if the cats are dead, because with it running so rich, the nox should be almost nonexistant. unless it's running hot *making* nox trying to reduce the hc. in which case, you probably still need a cat, and need to fix what is killing/has killed this one....

i's also check the cooling system is up to snuff and the rest of the 'standard stuff' like plugs (probably fouled out pretty badly), and i would throw a new o2 sensor in it.

make sure the vanos is operating properly, too. high nox is apparently a red flag for vanos operation iirc....forget who had that, though. it's been forever since i have done an actual emission failure so i am getting a bit rusty with some of the details. sorry.

(you'll get over it, right??)

co2 is a bit low, so i would also check engine vacuum and fuel pressure.

then report back.

and do a compression test while you are at it.

and then you can come finish my yard for me, too.....

I forget what year your 325 is but does it have an SAP and is the SAP working?

Re: Another Smog Thread

It's not mine, just a car I am thinking about buying. It's a 95.

95 shouldn't have SAP, but even if it did what difference would that make? I thought that only ran for a few minutes after a cold start.

Cooling system appeared to be functioning just fine. Typical VANOS rattle but didn't feel badly affected.

The whole idea here is to find out how much money is the minimum I'll need to get it to pass smog so I can decide if I want to buy the car or not. If I can slap cats on it and call it a day I'll probably do it for the right price. If I need a long list of parts I can't get it for cheap enough to make me happy.
