Has anyone successfully installed a recycled XM receiver

I recently purchased a used 2010 528i and understood that it would have XM. The receiver was missing but it was prewired. (dealer made good on the issue so not crying there) I now have to find a retrofit.
I have been told that the XM is activated via the vin number and once it is activated (by BMW / dealer) the receiver can't be used in a different car. I have not been able to confirm or deny this ay any level. Can anyone help? I understand that a software upgrade of sorts is in order and am fine with that, but $1200.00 for a radio - not cool.

Thanks

I believe all the cars come pre-wired. You can buy a receiver at several places, but it will still be necessary for someone(dealer) to program it. I ended up buying the receiver at the dealer and having them program it.

- Not all the cars come pre-wired. It is an option

- You can buy any second hand SAT radio. It has nothing to do with the VIN

- The dealer can program it after you buy and install it. They may charge you $50 or $300

- If you can find a local forum member that does this sort of thing, it can be programmed at home for free or whatever deal you make with them.

All that said--- I hate my SAT radios. I have three of them and every once in a while I try their free programming for a couple months and after a day or 2 I quite turning it on. The only time I liked it was when traveling and I wanted to hear a specific game and I found it on there.
