Oil Change

Do you guys bring your BMW back to the dealer to get the oil change or it can be done by any mechanics? How often do you get an oil change?

Just do it yourself like most on this board. These cars are the easiet to change oil on of any I've ever worked on. But if you must, it can be changed by anyone, just be sure they use a quality filter and one of the BMW approved synthetic oils.

Personally I like to change the oil at 7500 miles, or 2X BMW's low maintenance recommendation.

I change the oil when the service computer says 10,000 miles to go, 5,000 miles to go, and 0 miles to go. Which works out to every 5,000 miles, sometimes less.

I take the car to an independent shop. The dealer will overcharge you like crazy. I would do it myself, but for most of the year I don't have anywhere to work on the car.

EDIT: Try to find a shop that specializes in BMWs, and make sure they use the right oil. There's a place near me that does all kinds of European cars, and they stock the same oil the dealer uses.

Avoid quick-lube places, they don't know what they're doing.

If you're still covered under the BMW maintenance plan just go to the dealer when required. If you want to change it n between the required service intervals, do it yourself or find a good indie shop specializing in BMWs. The e46 is one of the easiest cars on the planet to perform an oil change.

I just did mine this weekend, every 7500 miles. I bought a big 36mm socket for the oil filter, 7 quarts of 10W-40 Castrol synthetic oil and the filter kit I bought online with filter gasket and drain plug washer. If you normally do your oil change with any other cars, it's just the same... did it with eyes closed ;-)

Not to be picky but only the following common oils are 'technically' BMW approved:

BMW 5-30 Synthetic
Castrol Syntec 0-30 (European formulation)
Mobil1 0-40

Look on the back of the Bottle for the BMW test approval.

With that said, any mainstream synthetic will likely do fine.

I bring my car to the dealer when the service indicator tells me a need an oil change. The work is covered by the maintainence plan so it doesn't matter what the dealer charges.

The car is leased so I don't bother with any additional oil changes that are not covered by BMW.

I let the dealer do the first oil change when the service indicator said it needed to be done. That was at about 13K. My plan is to take a sample at about 20K and have it analyized to see if it needs to be changed. If I can, I'd rather wait and have the dealer do the oil change at the next service interval.
