Do a search, this has been covered many times and there are widely varying opinions.

the car'll run on 89. the computer will adjust. try 89 for awhile then do a tank of 91 again. i'm pretty sure you won't go back to 89. if you run mid-grade all the time your spark plugs will need to be replaced before 100k.

Also, without getting into the whole discussion again about whether it will run as well on 89, whether you'll get the same mileage with the lower grade, the importance of added detergents in premium gas, etc. (all of which have been discussed many times with many different opinions expressed), the savings would be minimal. Assuming you fill up once a week, 10 cents a gallon x 18.5 gallons x 52 weeks = less than $100 per year. Not worth it IMO.

Better fuel = less revs required for general driving = less stress to engine components

Lower grade fuel for your Bimmer is false economy.

If you want to save on the cost of fuel, check firstly that your air filter is clean, your engine has clean oil and your tyre pressures are correct.

Premium Gas

If you don't use premium, the car will absolutely not perform like it should. The manual says to use fuel with at least 90 octane and they mean it.

Hey don't take it personal; I'm not going to go look but I'm pretty sure I could find at least 8 threads started on this subject in the past three months, and it tends to make the regulars a little restless.

Welcome to the 'fest anyway!

PS I use Premium, from one of the BMW top tier gas suppliers myself.

What do you mean? Can you elaborate on the "BMW top tier gas suppliers"?

From an extremely reliable source who used to work for Mobil...Lots of gas station owners pay the guy who delivers the gas to fill up all the tanks with Regular. This way, the driver benefits and the gas station benefits by charging 20+ cents more for the same product. There is no way the consumer can tell the difference between the two different octanes.

That's not right. Fuel usually has different colours, depending on the octane. The manufacturers use different dyes to distinguish between the fuels.

Anyways, I definitely can tell when different fuel is used. It just feels more lethargic with the lower grade gas.

It depends on specific country regulations. For instance they used to colour code fuels
in Poland some 10-15 years ago (98 was red, 94 yellow, 86 green and 78 blue) but afair
all gasoline that is on sale now doesn't have any specific color (other than resulting from
the blend of components which usually makes it very difficult to distinguish from each other).

Before you say "because that would make shell take the franchise away from the owner", I would think that ANY brand that catches a franchise owner conning his customers like that would take the franchise away from the owner.

This is the first I hear of gas stations putting regular in all tanks BTW....

Is this Top Tier thing just an additive that's already put into the gas? I use fuel injector cleaner whenever I get my oil changed, it seems like they're the same type thing, but the top tier is less concentrated. I didn't really notice any difference between the before and after.
