S28i UOA 4800 miles

As a retired oil distributor, I like to review UOA's, so I drained factory fill at 4800 miles to get idea of engine condition.

The BMW oil is a very good 10cSt 30 weight oil with only 1ppm molybdenum, 30ppm iron and 31ppm copper wear.

It had trace of insolubles, 405 flashpoint (<.5 fuel), and zero coolant.

Most other companies new engines have lots of Moly, and iron, but this looks like a sample after 20k miles on engine with 4800 on oil.

They flagged my 10ppm silicon saying it was high with sealers from new engine.

The Mobil 1 0w40 I installed has approx 7ppm silicone as virgin oil for antifoam, and 12 is when it should be flagged if it's all dirt.

If I knew the factory oil or engine was this good, I could have gone until the dealer change since I don't drive much ( retired).

I'm sorry my friend, but I'm completely clueless on what you just said

So in a nutshell, are you saying that at 4800 miles, the your oil is good until the next recommended change interval? I am contemplating on doing a 7k miles OCI, so I'm interested to know your findings/opinion based on your personal experience (in layman's term please).

Thanks.

Yeah,

1. BMW factory fill is good, and looks like regular oil; not break-in oil.

2. The N20 2.0l turbo engine shows very little wear in the oil at 4800 miles, and had low fuel and no coolant in it.

3. I'm not sold on 15k miles, but I would have run the oil 10k miles without worry.

4. I like Mobil 1 0w40 which has some molybdenum for anti-wear which I have in now.

5. As picky as I am, I'll take the free oil changes for 4 years, and go back to 0w40 after that.

6. Many BMW enthusiasts bring up these questions, and I tested for answers.

Thank you for taking the time outlining your insights. It definitely provides me with enough information so I can decide for myself.
