Running BMW stolen from Linden gas station

This guy saves tries to save himself 5 seconds by not shutting off his car and having to restart it; and now he has to deal with his insurance company, deal with his lost phone and any unauthorized calls, etc., etc. So much for the "convenience" of leaving your car running...

Running BMW stolen from Linden gas station, tracked to Newark but still missing
Katie Lannan
May 04, 2015 at 10:26 AM, updated May 04, 2015 at 10:27 AM

LINDEN — An Edison man's $26,000 BMW was stolen shortly after midnight Monday morning after he left it running while he went into a gas station convenience store, police said.

The 37-year-old man was inside the store at the Exxon station at 11 East Edgar Road when he saw another man jump in his car and drive north on Route 1&9, Capt. James Sarnicki said.

A sergeant on patrol followed the car, with his lights and sirens on, but couldn't catch up, Sarnicki said. Police last saw the BMW as it headed into Elizabeth, traveling at a high speed.

The man's iPhone had been in the car, and officers were able to use the phone's tracking app to locate the car in Newark, Sarnicki said.

Linden police passed the information to the Newark police department. The car has not been recovered as of Monday morning.

The man who took the car was described only as an African-American man wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt and headphones. The car has the New Jersey license plate Z38ESF.

If you have comfort access keyless entry, you can still save the 5 seconds by locking your car before you walk away.

I take it that he didn't believe in gas savings from auto start stop. There's a chance that his car will end up in Russia or Nigeria. Did you know that a significant number of cars in Nigeria are used cars from New York, New Jersey, and Texas? In much of Africa, incomes are low but people still need to go places. That is where there's a thriving used car market. The increasing use of electronics is making it harder for African drivers.

In many states, it is illegal to leave any vehicle, commercial or passenger, unattended and unlocked with the engine running. In my home state of Maryland, it carries a fine of $70 plus one point on the vehicle operator's license.

If such a law is applicable in New Jersey, Middlesex County, and/or Linden, I hope the BMW owner mentioned in the OP is cited and fined.

Auto thefts have been decreasing over the years in Linden, NJ but this idiot just bumped up the numbers:

http://www.city-data.com/crime/crime...ew-Jersey.html

Personally I NEVER...did I say never?...leave my car running under ANY...did I say any?...circumstances while not attended.

Must be something in my DNA?

Darwin was right.

Not that it matters much but Linden is in Union County, not Middlesex.

Right. We need to support those economies. It's the bleeding liberal / Democrat way

What? I've never heard of this (not saying you are wrong). What is their reasoning for this? I used to deliver pizza' and would leave my car running while running to and from the house. I think that's a whack law.

Car I just sold I left running all the time, since it was a '95 S6 and was just less wear and tear. Been doing it for years. Getting gas whatever, outside running unlocked with me watching thru the window.

I have an easier and less costly solution. Shut the engine down with the push of a button or turn of a key. And keep that key or remote in your pocket.

I've got no sympathy for someone who makes their car a target for theft.

No, it isn't. BMW doesn't need to solve a problem created by people too lazy to turn off their cars when they walk away from them. Actually, BMW did solve this problem--the ignition OFF switch.

Ha--well, when you are driving a 20 year old car, don't you kinda want it to be stolen?

Well if the driver had his keys on him the thief won't be able to restart the car once it's turned off.

If there's nobody around I've left my car running and unattended before. I usually do it in the summer because it's so GD hot outside.

There is no such law here. (Rather, there is no such penalty here -- no points. There are "No Standing" zones and/or blanket prohibitions that would carry a fine.)

... but let's not kid ourselves. It's as likely the cop couldn't catch up only because he avoided endangering other motorists. It might have been a different story without any bystanders to protect--or if another unit had been in a position to intercept. As the saying goes, "nothing outruns a Motorola!"

+1.

Those who make a habit of leaving their unattended cars running may be interested to know that many insurance carriers will deny a theft claim if a key was left in the vehicle.

New Jersey has laws which prohibit the idling of a vehicle for more than 3 minutes, with certain exceptions ...

(I'm gonna guess the BMW wasn't a stick.)
