Test drove the 2020 X3 M today

Was invited to the local dealer to test drive the new X3 M today as part of BMW's "M Tour". The particular vehicle was the X3 M Competition. Color was Donnington Gray -- very stunning color.

Really liked the vehicle for the most part. Handles SO MUCH nimbler/tighter than my X5 50i, even though I have the Adaptive M suspension with DHP. I would definitely consider this for my next purchase, except you can't install a tow hitch due to the rear diffuser. This won't work for me because I'm an avid biker and I frequently need to transport multiple bikes on a hitch-mounted bike rack.

So I'm probably going to buy a Macan as my next vehicle when I'm ready to get rid of my X5.

Unless there is some very odd design, it seems that all you need to do it cut a nice square hole in the diffuser and install the hitch. Any competent shop would have no problems doing it.

Brad, that's good to hear. I am trading in my X6 50i and I'm picking up my X4M tomorrow at 2:30. Only had a brief ride before ordering.

Wow! Had my X4M for 4 days now. What a monster. Still in the 1200 breakin so can't take above 5500 RPMs. The best part, my wife hasn't complained about the ride. Actually the ride isn't bad. Just a little stiffer than my X6.

The non-M X3's offer a factory trailer hitch. The rear bumpers for the M and non-M might be the same except for the lower insert. The X3M might have larger mufflers where the trailer hitch mounting hardware would go, though.

My favorite BMW dealership's has an X3M Competition lot bunny handing around for over 100 days. So, they're probably motivated to get rid if it.

I use this on my X5. Goes under the bumper and is fantastic. I may be wrong but I think they have one for theX3 too. http://execuhitch.com/tow-hitches/

I now have a thousand miles on my 2020 X3M....and I'm seriously impressed! How a 4600 lb. piece of steel can handle like a go kart is amazing.

I have been into X5's (9 of them) and this is a great change. Sure, of course it rides hard, even in comfort, and the mileage is poor, but once you floor that pedal, all complaints go away!

I just put on the factory winter/tire package (Chicago life!) and those 21 inchers will be missed...for now.

My only question: should I have gotten that X3M Competition???

So, anyone have an opinion on the X3M vs. the X3M Comp?

I'm going to go drive them both today.

last weekend I drove the Mecan S and GTS and then the X3m. for the price I would definitely get the X3m. more features too. the S , no , the GTS is nice, great steering and great transmission. but the X3m matches the transmission and has more room and 5003 hp. and the only AWD vehicle I have driven that can drift the rear end.

Hello everyone! My first post . Just wanted to say I bought a fully loaded x3m competition a month ago . I drove it every day just to get to my 1200 mile break in faster.
Well, I just got the car back and been doing a little harder break in now! This car is absolutely amazing and it's a complete beast!
Funny thing is I was shopping for 6 months for Porsche cayennes, Macans the looking at an x5.
Porsche is incredible but, give you nothing in options and HP for the same price of a BMW.
So I started looking at x5s. And couldn't find the color combo I wanted and while looking on the lot I stumbled onto the black sapphire/w tartuffo
In an x3. Not knowing what the car was I asked to test drive. After 1 minute it through my entire Porsche obsession out the window and the x5!
2 days later I owned a x3 competition. Hahahaha. My favorite thing has been when someone in a tuner car drives up next to me being a smart ass and then I see him in the review mirror! Love this car!

Those of you that have pulled the trigger, have you guys been able to get a good amount off the MSRP? I am seeing quite a few sitting on lots now and wonder if the dealers are willing to play ball yet.

I currently have a X3M Competiton "loaner" in my driveway while my 2017 540 M Sport is in for service. It's good to be on very friendly terms with all of the management, especially the GM.

I have put about 40 miles on it today. While my 540 is a bit mundane, I have owned a number of sports sedans and cars. The most notable a 2009 Z06 Corvette. So I hope my comments are valuable.

The ride is better than expected for a "Competition". I was not really expecting that. I could live with it easily. Power is very good. But given that we now have a few credible road tests on it, no need to cover that. I found the seats to be quite comfortable, but the bolsters could be an issue on a long trip. Hard to tell though. I'm 5'9" and 163 lbs. if you are much bigger than me it could be a tight fit. And I was sure to relax the bolsters.

I like a good sound system and have been a bit dissapojnted in the HK in my 540. The one I had in my F10 550 was noticeably better. The one in the X3 loaner is much better than my 540. I was very pleased with it.

I liked it a lot, but must say that for what I do with my car (my three motorcycles have all the fun) I find the X3M a lot of money for a vehicle without a lot of luxury features I like. For the same money I would much prefer a M550. I don't need an SUV as my wife has one. The problem with a sedan, almost any sedan, is that resale has gone south on sedans and I don't like to keep cars more than 3-4 years. I would only consider the X3M if I thought resale would be significantly better. I know that SUVs generally are, but not sure about a performance SUV. I even asked both the GM and used car manager that question and they both say it's a crap shoot. Too early to tell on the X3M

Overall I will repeat that I really liked it a lot. I could easily buy one if the deal was really good.
