Over The Air Updates

I believe the X5 (G05) has the subject capability. Is that a complete update of the software? Are there still software/firmware updates that can only be performed in the shop at the dealer? Also, what is the format of the software revision code?

Thanks for any clarification on the above.

The OTA updates are for the media system only, and if you notice on this forum, haven't performed very well. Any other updates has to be performed by the dealership, and ONLY when they suspect an issue. Most dealers will not update the internal software unless there is an issue. It takes about four hours in a service bay and most won't tie up their bay unless necessary to correct an problem, and get paid by BMW.

Very few people have had the Remote Software OTA updates.

It's not clear if it will be all ECU or just a select few. The BMW suggested size (850MB) and time taken (20-30 mins) suggest they will not be flashing all ECU but it's TBC.

As it stands the only way to get a full i-step upgrade is at the dealer, though that may change in the next few weeks/months.

Format via idrive interface is month/year.pointversion e.g. 11/2019.40

I just called the "Genius" folks and they say there is no need for a dealer update anymore and that everything is covered in an OTA.

They misinformed you.Not that it matters as you don't have your car yet do you?

Unless you see a bunch of OTA posts on this or the other forum you are posting on, I'd ensure your dealer updates your car as part of the hand-over.

How is it possible that I was misinformed by a "Genius"

There were a few test OTA updates last June and none have been performed since but rumor has it that they are coming soon. Of course that has been the rumor for quite a few months now. Things could have changed but the information released earlier was that the OTA updates should remove any need for going to the dealer to get an update for iDrive. The "Genius" at BMW was probably reading from something that will be correct in the future.
