How about those 'Niners!

Can't quite figure it, I didn't watch all that much football this year. Partly because my longtime main team, the Raiders, were just too depressing. They've had and lost some great players in the not distant past - Jared Cook and Latavius Murray looking good with the Saints, Khalil Mack with the lackluster bears. And Chucky is just too weird on the sidelines.

But hey, here I am in the dual loyalties corner of the NFL, the Bay Area, and somehow without me really noticing the niners are kicking major ass. I saw them win big in New Orleans and then that game last night was some kind of nail biter. I was dreading a Hawks TD any second. Would have been some kind of letdown, what with the Niners dominating early. But oh well, they held out and now all NFC roads to the SB go through Santa Clara. They could well see the Hawks at some point. W/o the Seattle wall of noise.

Oh man, I couldn't help imagining the consternation of famous Hawks head Sportsdad watching Richard bleedin' Sherman kicking Hawks' arse for the Niners! Now and then a wee bit of schadenfreude goes down just fine.

I like your squad better than mine and I have the two seed. I can't believe Chucky got another job in the NFL.

Not sure who you mean by 'my squad.' The Raiders were my squad for a long time. I was giving the younger Davis a pass for a long time but throwing the bank at Chucky, my guess as a nod to Vegas show biz, and letting much of the rest of the team go to heck soured me a bit. I knew of course that Mack went to Chicago but for some reason my head hasn't been in the NFL much this year. So I searched to see how they had done and it looks like average. Ran across the info that Mack, 29 years old, has never won a playoff game. Dang, that ain't right. One of the best in the league in a drought like that.

Your squad? The Packers? They are good, Rodgers is some kind of force but I don't think they beat the Niners.

I'm almost wondering if the Seahawks will win the conference. They finished the game like a freight train. Not sure I've ever seen a team come so close to losing so many times as did the Niners but hanging on somehow. That delay of game penalty was like a reprieve from on high. I was thinking it was over.

How about that Kirk Cousins! I always thought the guy had pretty good talent that was going to come out. Always struck me as little insulting when he was referred to like he was chopped liver back when he was backup for RG3. I still think the latter got a raw deal in his rookie season. Should have sat out the season after that knee injury. God knows how things would have progressed had that happened.

The Vike's victory ensures that the Niners don't meet the Hawks in the next game. We can save that for the division championships.

Then you should be a Packer fan. I don't like playing a team three times in one season, but my best bet is on the Vikings.

I like the Packers. The 49ers could have drafted Rodgers from nearby Cal but they chose Alex Smith! Oh well, poor guy finally landed on his feet but there were plenty here who rued having him and not Rodgers for more than a few years.

Well that was slightly brutal. I'm glad it wasn't some 40 point shutout but even so, I felt for Rodgers. He still has a lot of skill but holy crap, SF is some kinda machine. How it got that way is a puzzle but there it is. Rodgers looked a bit tired of the grind at times last night. Who knows, he's 'only' 37 but plenty of guys hang it up around then.

I did a search on him today and I don't feel as badly for him as I did - his girlfriend is Danica Patrick.

I think Rodgers is only 36, but the Packers were way out-talented and out-speeded. You now carry the burden against Mahomes and you sound like some sort of front runner

Who knows, KC is some kinda hot team. We came awfully close to losing to the Seahawks. If that'd happened we might've gotten beat in Green Bay instead of them. Point being, the niners can stall with a big lead. I hate it when that happens. And the Chiefs seem to like coming back from a deficit.

Pretty good game, if you leave out that way overthrown hail mary on 3rd down at the end by Jimmy G. I heard them say after that this was Coach Reid's first Super Bowl win and they damn sure did beat us. I'm glad for him, a real class act. Hat's off.

The Niners only won 4 games last year, pretty impressive turnaround. Now we can look forward to years of rivaly 'tween Jimmy G. and Mahomes.

Garopolo is a POS. Dilfer played the game of his life when he got a chance. Never spied Mahomes and paid the price.

As a Falcons fan, you have my sympathies with regard to Kyle Shanahan. He choked away a locked-up Super Bowl for Atlanta with his lousy 4th quarter playcalling, and he's done it again with San Fran.

I hate rooting for a team that runs up a big lead and then tries to sit on it. The Niners almost lost to the Seahawks in that fashion in the game that may well have determined who went to the SB from their division.

OTOH, they had some wild games this season. Not sure I've seen a team with that good a ground game for some time.

Jimmy G is still young and cocky. Some serious talent in the mix, his passing game against the Saints was good. OTOH, a good looking guy like that suddenly with money and prestige ... hope he managaes to stay on his feet. This loss will hopefully be good for him.

Rivers and Brady are on the loose. Either one is a massive upgrade.

Rivers is consistently good. Not sure, somehow he seems quite good, but more like A- thab A or A+. Can't put my finger on it.

Who knows about Brady. I thought I saw a bit of slowing down last year. Going to happen sooner or later. He's 42. Rivers 38. The guy who I would worry about is Rodgers, 36. Dude still has it but dang he seems grumpy. Like his heart is going out of the game.
