Chip's questionable life choices 3.0: TI redemption

I've wanted a blue ti for 11 years and I just did the thing; I bought a 98 318TI in Montrealblau with a manual trans and 160,000 miles.

I'm super hyped and I have 10 years worth of parts stockpiled to make this thing bitch'en.

More or less immediately I have a red millpoint interior , a Z3 steering rack, X brace, M3 bumpers, brakes, spindles, and sway bar.

Hopefully in the near future I'm going to get Bilstein sport shocks, some sort of lowering springs, and an M54B30 and an LSD.

Anyway, here's a couple pics, more to follow once I get her home.

Cool. I look forward to the build log. I always liked the ti. Can't beat that weight savings on an e36. Is it a slicktop too? Hard to tell with the what looks like a plasti dipped roof. Also please tell me you have new headlights for it.

Uhg. I was really planning to get right on this project, but litterally 8 hours after I bought the car my dad died so I've been swamped with B.S. related to that.
Ended up taking longer than anticipated to pick it up and the PO's HOA started getting ****ty with him, but it's home now and I have managed to correct the most glaring problem; those head lights.

Also got new cooling system parts ordered and started cleaning up my clubsport interior.

Finally had a chance to get down to business on the interior swap. Anyone spot my super secret side project in there?

Actually yes, possibly, eventually. Opening the vent windows is a PITA.

But for now I'm just trying to fit an E46 center console and radio into it.

It's mostly going pretty smoothly, but the radio is displaying -DISABLED- and I'm not sure if it's an anti theft thing, or because E46 radios get the time from the instrument cluster and without that signal it doesn't want to work. Gotta plug it into my E46 to find out.

Well, ****.
Got rear ended in Ohio yesterday. It's mostly cosmetic, but it's tricky to see the sheet metal up behind the bumper and the exhaust is bent and is louder than I remember it being.

Just went to a BMW approved body shop and they quoted over 1500 even if it doesn't need sheet metal work.

Well at least DC is a BMW city. I have been scouring the area for another compact as my 332Ti is succumbing to rust on the underside thanks to the wonderful winter road deicing materials we use that eat cars.

Uhg. Just went back to the shop and pulled the bumper off so they could see behind it... Looks like one shock got fully collapsed and the frame rail buckled. Also the estimator had one of the techs take a look and he pointed out a crease in the bodywork forward of the rear wheel. They're working on the new estimate to send to the insurance company, but most likely this body is toast....

tis are just so damn hard to find, and I really want a blue one so my choices are pretty crap.

That's what I was afraid of. Even with generous estimates on similar cars, that's way past the level of a total.

I almost let myself think I was going to get color matched Mtech bumpers and a drop out of all this, but I figured the odds were against me.

Got offered $2,750 which is barely enough to find an automatic arctic silver car in need of a cooling system... I sent back a few completed BaT listings and current Autotrader listings and receipts for the parts I've put into it. We'll see how it goes.

Just remember. Thats your car. Not the insurance companies. If it was me.. And im considered a spiteful ass, but a eye for eye spiteful ass. .. Id say "You did $4grand worth of damage.. I want my 4 fricken grand you dirtbag!"
Id keep my car, fix it myself. (Obviously you may not have those skills, but if i didnt, id still part the car out or take what i need). Then use that $4000 or whatever and buy my next e36 to be squandered in love and effection. Remember. They broke your stuff. They didnt buy anything. And they have to pay for what they destroyed. They owe you what they broke whether or not they think its worth less or more what it actually is. For instance, if you went into a store amd accidently broke a tv.. The store wouldnt take half of what the price of the tv was would they? Not even if the tv was priced half as much at another store would they? Of coarse not. You should be the same. Take nothing less than what its worth.

Well, I sent the insurance company my receipts for the new cooling system and a few recently sold tis from BaT and they upped their offer to $3,540 and I still keep the car. I don't really think I could get much more without getting lawyers involved so I'm taking it.

Good move. A lawyer would take anything else you squeezed out of the insurance company and then some. You would most likely end up with less after the lawyers fee even if they got you quite a bit more.
