Night vision function?

I drive a 2012 535i xDrive. When I was reading through the manual, I read something about a night vision function that displays what is ahead of you on the screen. Flipping through my iDrive, i didn't find where to access that function. Does it come on all cars? May mine not have it? I was doing a little bit of reading on other forums and read something about someone talking about retrofitting the night vision or something.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, thank you in advance!

If it doesn't show then you don't have it, not all cars come with it. You should look up your vin with a vin decoder to see what you do have.

Take a look at the front grille and see if there is a camera there. It will be located near where the M/// badge would be on an M/// Sport model.

I have it in my 535d and it's one of the coolest features of the car, second only the N57 diesel engine.

I have taken a few pics of the screen and will post 'em up.

The manual covers many features that are not standard. Night vision is a standalone option, not part of any package. I drive frequently on country roads where deer cross unpredicatably. I have it and I would not order a car without it. If I drove solely in urban areas, I might feel differently.

It is an option, most fun way to find out if you have it is to start pushing the buttons to the left of the steering column (the Driver's Assistance panel) underneath the headlight controls.

FLIR Systems Inc. (www.FLIR.com), the manufacturer of the PathFindIR night vision camera has a good whitepaper describing the night vision function in BMW cars. Check out the attached PDF. Also check out the pics. The night vision images are thermal images. The camera responds only to infra-red energy radiated by objects, what we normally feel as heat. Ambient temperature appears as a middle gray color in the image. Objects warmer than ambient appear to glow. Objects cooler than ambient appear darker. The camera does not respond to visible light at all. It won't get blinded by car headlights. BMW's night vision software automatically highlights part of the image with a yellow color whenever it detects the image looks like a person standing. Wildlife such as deer are highlighted with an orange color. The babe highlighted in the last pic is my smokin' hot wife.

The FLIR night vision camera has saved me from cops a few times at night on the highway where they were hiding in the median with all lights off and not transmitting radar. I was already aware of them before my headlights lit them up. The cop can hide in the darkness but can't hide the heat signature from his car's engine.

I have this option and have found it useful driving in rural areas at night, as it can see much further down the road than your headlights can illuminate, although it is a bit distracting to have to look at the nav screen to see the image. I believe when it detects a human or animal it flashes the image onto the head-up-display. Driving in heavy rain or snow diminishes the effectiveness of the system. I suppose it could also be used to settle arguments as to who is hotter, not that anyone would ever use it for that. Would they?

I have it and never use it because distracting, but if it pops up objects on the HUD as you describe I might actually use it. Freakin' deer.
