E92 Oil level

Hello Members:

My '07 328xi coupe just passed 190K without too many problems. I've noticed that the oil level gauge fluctuates between max and 1/4 qt low (assuming that minimum would be 1 qt low). Is this normal? What are the signs that the sending unit is going? What is involved and what is the cost of replacing the oil level sending unit? Please advise. Thanks.

Hello Porando: As it fluctuates to "Maximum", I don't want to take the chance to overfill it. I had read somewhere that these sensors are set to malfunction (by BMW) at 187K. I have 190K, and have noticed no red lights. Do you know what might signal the failure of this sensor?

A working indicator only has 7 display points:
  • Over a quart low ("+1qts")
  • Min ("OK")
  • 3/4 quart low ("OK")
  • 1/2 quart low ("OK")
  • 1/4 quart low ("OK")
  • Max ("OK")
  • Overfill (">MAX")

Failure of the sensor is indicated by a minimum length bar on the left side of the display and the word "INACTIVE" above it. They do not have a design "self-destruct" mileage.

You're just rocking back and forth on the edge of 2 display points. You're fine.

The sensor being a tube shaped capacitor, ain't no movin' parts to break. BUT....can be fooled by water in oil! Driving >10 mi begins the evaporation of condensation, common this time of year.

How boutcha OP - short trips as a rule?

My 2007 does the same thing ...... the read out is not geanular enough to show 1/8 so itís either full or down 1/4 as the oil level seems to gradually drop a bit between oil changes.

Erratic oil levels are a sign of a bad sensor. I had the same problem. I didn't want to overfill, so I drained the oil and changed the sensor. Problem solved.

3/4 - full - 3/4 - full is not "erratic", it's "the oil level is just around 3/4". The behavior is perfectly normal.

Sure, if you were getting Max-Min-1/4-Max-Min, you would be justified with changing the sensor. If you were getting what the OP posted, you wasted a bunch of money on new oil and a new sensor.
