headlight assembly change?

My son-in-law took his E90 in for a right side low beam failure. He had just replaced it, noticed that the socket was bad and decided to go to Rahal BMW in Pittsburgh. They told him that the entire headlight assembly needed to be replaced because the low beam socket was bad. He may have said "burned" - I don't remember. In looking online, I see all of the parts for the headlight assembly including the sockets. https://www.getbmwparts.com/v-2007-b...amp-components

He asked me if I thought they were less than truthful. It seems odd that a bad socket means that the entire headlight assembly needs to be replaced to the tune of $1050. Does anyone have experience here?

Still reading from my search here but looking for usable advice.

I'd take it to an indy for a second opinion. The electrical connections for the socket should be separate from the assembly. The assembly just has a screw in connector the bulb. The socket fro the bulb doesn't have any electrical connections at all. The electrical connections mate to the bulb outside the headlight assembly. At worst, you would need a new connector, not a new assembly. Take a look at the connector and see if there is any corrosion. You might be able to scrape it off and improve electrical connection.
