Oil preferences

What oil is everyone using? Iíve owned my 06 325i for almost 2 years now and looking to change the oil myself for the first time. Was thinking royal purple hmx, but was just curious of what everyone else is using.

Hold on, let me get my popcorn. This thread is gonna go places.

I personally use Mobil 1 0W40. I don't think it's LL01 approved anymore, but I haven't had a engine explode (yet).

I always use either Mobil 1 or Castrol full synthetic 5W30. Basically whichever is on sale. Change my own oil every 7,000kms never had problems. I do want to experiment with 0W40 this winter to see if there will be a significant difference. The average winter temp here is -30C. It does start fine with 5W30 but Iím just curious.

Oil Change

I've been using AMSOIL synthetic for over 3 years, am totally pleased, 2003 3251 with 115k miles. Runs like a bandit!

This is the most important quality of the oil you select. The next, based on 50 years of use, 1.5M miles of driving, is the proper weight. I would stick with the same weight you have been using, which hopefully was the mfg'rs recommended in the owner's manual. Lastly, the general rule is the wider the spread of the weights, (right side of '-' & left side of '-') means the less durable and less robust.
i.e. 5W-30 would be preferred over 0W-40, if both were approved. Unless you drive in Alaska. Then you need the 0W to get your engine to turn over.

Tomorrow or Thursday I will hit the 300,000 mile mark on my third e39. My e53 has almost 200,000 miles.

All the e39s used using Mobil 1 10w-30 for the last ~150,000 miles of their life. The X5 was purchased new and used the BMW Castrol until the warranty was up, then the Mobil 1 went in.

None have every had the heads off, VANOs replaced, or timing chains replaced.

3 are/were I6, 1 was a V8 (97' 540i/6sp, I miss than car!).

FWIW, YMMV.

Oops - forgot the motorcycle - K1200GT - 30,000 miles

Good stuff, I like the Mobil 1. I have been using it in my BMW bikes for years, but when I went on Mobil's website to see what oil to use in my 2012 128I, I got "there is no Mobil product that meets the requirements". I wound up using the Castrol syth. Next time I am going to use the Mobil 1. I change every 8k miles anyway.

Motul 8100 Xcess 5w-40. Meets BMW LL-01 standard. Had some problems with oil burning with BMW oil. No problems with Motul. It's expensive, but I buy it on Amazon where it's more affordable and change the oil myself. Highly recommended by the indy shop I use that also does race prep for BMWs racers.

I've settled on Mobil 1 0W40 European Formula for both my E36 318ti and my E85 Z4 3.0i. Both engines run smoother and rev faster (subjective, I know) with this oil than others I've tried. LL-01 or not doesn't bother me, since the "LL" stands for Long Life i.e. extended oil change intervals and I don't do the miles to need that. Once my F36 440i is off the free service, it will get Mobil 1 as well.
