E70 X5 M and E71 X6 M (2010 - 2015)
The BMW X5 M and X6 M are the first xDrive all-wheel-drive vehicles from M GmbH. The M variants offers the same utility as the regular X5 and X6, with the addition of the V8 M TwinPower Turbo, a twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V8 delivering 560 horsepower and 500 lbft of torque.

X5 2012 vs. 2014 - is it worth the extra 10K?

Hi All, I am new to this group. I live in the US and I am trying to decide b/w BMW X5 2012 vs. BMW X5 2014. The 2012 xdrive35 is the old model, the used one with 80-90K miles is around $14,000. The 2014 xdrive35 is a newer model, the used one with 50-60K miles is around $25,000. The price difference is more than $10,000. I drove both models and obviously, the 2014 one is more modern, better technology and handling. I am not positive if it is worth $10,000 extra.

Are 2012 models pricy to maintain or unreliable? Why is there such a high price difference b/w 2 models? Is it worth spending extra for 2014 models?

I love BMWs, I own 2012 525 model but need a larger vehicle.

Thanks!

Mein Auto: 2003 530i
I too had the same debate with myself. So, I compromised yesterday and bought a 2013 model x35i. I just paid about $14,000 at a dealer in DC. I had been driving a 530i for the last few years and needed a bigger model. I do love it, but must say, I miss the driveablility of the car. They did appear to do some updates between 2012 and 2014, but I would not say enough to justify $10k. Just my two cents worth. Mileage appears to be what guides the pricing. Lower the miles, the higher the bmw cost.

That is exactly how I feel about spending 10K extra for almost the same car

Personally I like the styling of the earlier e70 better. The F15/16's are very bland looking to me, but its a personal choice. I can see some of the arguments about the F series interiors being more up to date, but the exterior, not so much.

Anyway, there are some known issues for sure. If it hasn't been done, get the water pump replaced before it strands you. Its time to do the water pump, thermostat and coolant replacement as preventative maintenance anyway.

I'd also say change the transmission fluid/filter ASAP (I'm almost certain it has not been done), ZF recommends every 65K miles I believe, BMW says 100K 'lifetime fill'..

I'm a Diesel owner, so I'm sure the 35i guys will chime in with what I missed. But BMWs depreciate heavily because they are costly to maintain/repair. But if you do the maintenance, they aren't that bad to own (or so many say)..

Im in South Africa and own the E70 2012, 3.0d, M sport. What an awesome car and has everyone needed. A year ago I paid about $23k. Seems to be getting a bit troublesome. Just did the ZF oil changes in December but am still told that the transfer case and gear box needs to be overalled. Cost at ZF is about $3600.
Besides that I do all the maintenance myself which is very simple.
