CarPlay still has me totally confused. I like to run Escort Live or Waze on my iPhone set up on a dashmount. Whenever I do anything to CarPlay or change from CarPlay music to Sat radio or the car's FM or something, my iPhone goes to an iTunes screen trying to sell me iMusic or whatever it is, the Escort Live or other app that is running is shunned to the background, and the entertainment app takes three, four, or five steps to get to the Sat radio (I have to set up my favorites and figure out how to use them properly, first, I think). It's just a confusing mess to get back to my app, and I have to wait until my music settings are all finished, because any other change will affect the iPhone app again - even if CarPlay isn't involved! It's very squirrelly!

Apple CarPlay

I know the exact "option" button technique you're referring to. You have to read the onboard manual rather than the printed one to see that. When I follow those instructions on the screen they refer to, I don't get the choice to change he hotspot password. It's crazy because I know these options were there a week ago when they were demo'ed to me at the dealership.

Because of what you said about the CarPlay activation basically making the hotspot useless because it takes over the cars wifi connection I wondered if the hotspot menu option was disabled if CarPlay was enabled in any way. I tried disconnecting it and disabling CarPlay but still can't see the hotspot in the menu where it once was. Strange.

It's also a poor implementation if using CarPlay effectively disables the hotspot. Other riders of the car might want to use the hotspot regardless of whether the driver is using CarPlay for the infotainment system.

I guess a visit back to the dealer to ask some questions is needed. Ugh. I wonder if BMW has a technical support help line or something like that. Any ideas?

My internet hotspot never showed up after picking up the car from the dealer. what i discovered was the SOS button was also not working. took it back to services. they needed to reset and upgrade connected drive. 2+ hours.

Yeah you're problem might run deeper...hotspot still functions with CarPlay on. What I meant by effectively useless is that 99% of the time I'm the only one in the car with only my phone so it serves no use to me, but if there were passengers they could still use it. Indeed the way I figured this out was when I was on CarPlay I changed my wifi on the phone to the hotspot and then after a few seconds CarPlay would come back "on" and force change the wifi over to its internal CarPlay wifi

Do you have to have Wireless Hotspot to connect iPhone to Carplay through wireless? Does 2017 X5 have internal car Wireless?

2017 definitely does have hotspot. I have it. however finding it less useful since everyone already has data plan on their phone.

Car Play and Contacts

I set up and paired iphone as usual, no problem contacts transferred etc. Now it says to delete and re pair to setup carplay. I do this, but when I go back to BMW screens, it apparently doesn't load contacts if I set up using carplay.

Is this correct?

Thanks

This may or may not help. When I was messing around with car play on and off I saw that my iPhone had a message asking that I allow the X5 access to contacts. Once I allowed that all was fine. You have to look for this message on the iPhone, never saw it with the old iDrive.

Same here. My phone is fine but I get the same message you describe w my wife's phone. She's running iOS 9. Wonder if that's the issue. Keeps saying "wait for instructions on CarPlay device" (or something). But nothing happens and eventually I get a failure message.

I know this is an old thread, but just in case anyone comes across this while searching for why the internet hotspot menu item is missing in their Bmw with wireless CarPlay, it’s because they can’t both be used at the same time.
