Hello BaggieMatt,
Very big thank you for your effort !!! perfect write up.
I followed your instructions and the upgrade to SSD couldn't have been easier. Everything worked like a charm!
(2012 BMW 335i, e92)

Just some comments to anyone who's interested in doing the same:

Instead of Zheino 128GB, I've used RECADATA I6M Series mSATA 128GB SSD as it's speced to -40C to +85C ...hopefully it will operate better in extreme temperatures.

Placed it into mSATA to IDE adaptor:
https://www.addonics.com/products/adms25ide.php
* this adaptor is relatively expensive but according to Jagaer (https://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1426773) seems to be the only one that works, so I was not tempted to try cheaper alternatives.

For the cloning, I connected the original HDD and the adaptor to the PC (running Win10) via the cheapest IDE to USB cable, bought on Aliexpress:
https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1pcs...36614c4dRnKbGq

Over all the whole upgrade including the trims removal took 4 hours and costed about $100.

[QUOTE=BaggieMatt;9817373]Expanding the music partition

skipped...
14 Put the new drive in your CIC and start it up. Navigation should be working but the music won't.
15 Telnet into the CIC using the D-Link and run mkqnx6fs /dev/hd0t77.4 . It will warn you about deleting data.
16 Run slay HmiMain to restart the CIC. Once it is up then go into CD and then using the CIC controller go right and delete music collection. This seems to create the relevant directory structure.

hi BaggieMatt,

I have followed your instructions how to clone the drive and everything went well, thank you!
I got the 256 Gb RECADATA mSATA drive (with adapter) and wondering if I can extend the music partition even more (based on the description above)., I am not clear how to telnet into the CIC using the Dlink? Can you please explain in more details?

thanks!

Actually my disc copy was not successful. I realized that after I rebooted the CIC. When I click on Navigation menu it would not load and I am getting a message 'Function not available'. Strangely before I restart I could see navigation working. I tried to use 'HDD Raw copy tool' as well and everything was copied fine but the same result - as soon as I reboot CIC the Navigation would not work. And I am getting the small icon at the top of the screen that looks like a harddrive..

I am using RECADATA mSATA III MLC High Level Enterprise Class Solid State Drive SSD (256GB)
with Ableconn IIDE-MSAT mSATA SSD to 2.5-Inch IDE Adapter Converter
I know some people were successful of using these hardware components.. Not sure what is my issue here..

The performance gains are modest, since the interface is a significant bottleneck. The Nav boots up a few seconds quicker, you have more space for music, etc. I have seen 2 drive failures presumed to be heat related. My main concern is that we haven't been able to update the maps on a number of these, even running recent firmware. I think the TRIM or firmware on some of these drives doesn't get along with the QNX operating system, so map updates fail.

Very happy with the upgrade....everything works perfectly.
It's summer now in Australia and the car had a chance to "cook" properly in the sun a few times by now... I believe the temp in the car would have got as high as possible. Still no issues with the SSD
Performance gains are there but are minor...the main thing is being able to back up the HDD.

I have an old toahiba pata drive with 80 gb.. Ill just buy the adapters from AliExpress and clone the drive for backup reasons.. as some of you are right.. only the boot up is fast.. and I cant use the nav in my country ( prefer google maps anyway with live traffic updates..
so only backup for me..

the issue was in the controller, replacing it to the
mSATA SSD IDE conversion adapter KRHK-MSATA / I 9
did the trick.

I recently managed to nuke my E82 navigation with a bad map update and I'm wondering if applying a working HDD image on my HDD will fix the issue? Has anyone tried that? Or if can anyone share his HDD dump, that would be appreciated!

Thanks to all for the valuable information!

For the Mac users that completed this mod... Did you have to remove all the hidden Mac files before ejecting and installing the newly cloned SSD? Or did it matter that they were left in the folders?
Thanks!

Thinking of doing this on my 13' X5M - and going with the Recadata I6M 128GB mSata and the Addonics ADMS25IDE adapter as you did. Any advise on what software you used for cloning and did you clone the drives together (both connected) or copied the old one down to clone the new mSata drive? Also, were you able to expand the music partition and if so any advise on how to go about that? Lastly, after install have you had any issues loading map updates as some say they can't load map updates now due to the SSD?

Save the time and money, just upgrade to the AVIN and you'll likely never be using your stock CIC system ever again.

I just installed the MSATA (128gb) drive in my E70 (CIC) and I have noticed ZERO performance upgrade, but this was stated above as the BMW BUS system is the limiting factor. I went with the following - IDE/MSATA adapter (as suggested in this thread)

https://shopaddonics.com/ProductInfo...DE-mSATA-drive

and MSATA drive:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I'm just happy that I have a non-spinning drive now and also have a backup in the likely case it will fail in the future. My friend was a former BMW SA and she said BMW's came in all the time with failed HD's and it was pretty common as they got older.

I did expand the music partition out to 59GB following this thread:

https://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1157480

I found the hardest part was getting the dang trim off around the AC controls as it was very hard to pull off and I was worried I was going to break it at the weak points where it bends down toward the nav DVD drive/button panel at the bottom.

How has the drive held up over the years? I've done this with an MSATA and adapter tray, but it works for a few weeks and then has issues and loses the music partition and has other issues. I pull it an reformat and re-image and it works fine for a little while and then craps out again. I went with the RECADATA Msata as it was enterprise and had a higher temp rating. The music partition is the only issue and the rest of the CIC and NAV work fine. Thinking of switching over to a Zheino IDE SSD and dump the adapter as I'm wondering if it's corrupting the Music for some reason.

Can someone explain how to telnet to the car. I've ordered a DLINK adapter and I assume the USB goes to the port in the glovebox and you connect a PC via the ethernet cable. But telnet is an IP protocol so I guess your PC and the car need to have the same subnet/ip range to talk - how do you know what that is? I don't have the adapter yet so not sure how you set the IP on that. Is there a thread on this anywhere?

Hi,

You need to connect to your car with an odb cable to ethernet cable. This one works for example:
https://www.amazon.de/dp/B07DW8KMK5/..._G1xgEbQ227R5C

Then set your IP to manual (since the car doesn't have a DHCP server) - 169.254.199.98, subnet 255.255.255.0, gateway 169.254.199.99.

169.254.199.99 is the IP of your car.

Enjoy!
