Possible 740LD in my future...

Hi all! I found this forum so I could get some real world feedback from the folks actually driving and living with these cars. My wife found a 2015 740LD M-Sport that we drove and really love. The turbo diesel’s torque in sport + is a real hoot. It has 50k miles on it and is a 1 owner vehicle. This will be our first BMW. Are there any real world opinions on the reliability of these vehicles overall? Are they any more risky than other “used” cars? After driving it, I want to adopt it pretty badly but have huge trepidation about overall reliability and possible insane cost of ownership. This will be the wife’s daily driver. Can anyone either offer advice or ease my fears?

I would totally recommend it. It's fun power plant especially once you tune your ECU. Mine X5 with same engine is at 90k without any major problems. I would compare N57 engine to N55 reliability wise if not better. DEF system can be deleted if trouble some.

I have a 5er with the same engine and I agree that the torque is pretty nice. My recommendation would be to make sure you have some sort of warranty on the car, but not necessarily for the engine. There are countless electronic gizmos on a typical 7-series and therefore many opportunities for gremlins, particularly as the car ages. Good luck and hope you enjoy!

hi Jetaholic, what did you decide? I have the same question, looking to buy a 2015 740ld with 65k miles to replace my current 2000 540I 6speed manual with 170k miles which my son will start using. Would love the diesel torque, but concerned about reliability and repair costs in San Francisco bay area. Wondering if I should stick to Petrol engine.

BMW has stopped selling the diesel engines in the US recently, so parts support might be slower coming from Germany. I really considered getting a 750LD, but it sold before I could purchase it. Most European cars BMW makes are diesels, so they are very reliable.

2015 740ld

I purchased a 740 LD w/ x Drive new. I love the car but have had a few issues.

The torque of the car is great as is the mileage. I have been able to average about 36 mpg on the PA turnpike with an average speed of 80-85 mph. I now have 51K miles on the car and the total average mpg is 33.

I had someone bump the car in the rear which required a new read bumper cover. As there are few 740 LDs in the U.S., the part needed to be sourced from Germany. Also had an internal piece from the exhaust manifold come lose which destroyed the turbo. The expenses were covered under the extended warranty that I had purchased. However, again parts needed to be sourced from Europe. I have a few other postings on this site expressing dissatisfaction with service and its cost.

I would not recommend that you go forward with your purchase unless you get some sort of warranty.

Good luck.

This is good advice for any late-model BMW purchase, not just a diesel 7-series.
