X2 Roof Rails in the USA

I posted this on the X1 board earlier this week, but someone directed me here. I am hopeful that someone has info that can help me in my decision:

Seriously considering the X2 as a replacement to my 2016 X1. Went to the dealer and noted that there are no roof rails and no mounting points for a roof rack. Also not an option that the dealer can add.

Researched the German and Canadian BMW site and guess what? Roof rails and an available BMW roof rack system similar to that of the X1 are available.

Has anyone seen or heard of the availability of a roof system for the X2 in the US? I have trouble believing that BMW would release a smaller version of the X1 SAV and remove the ability to mount anything on the roof.

Thanks.

X2 Roof Rails in the USA

Are all X2ís delivered to the US capable of receiving these roof rails? I was told by the dealer, from which I bought my X2, that mine is not, they say that the roof rails will not be able to be installed on my X2. Iím following up with BMW of North America on this, as that would mean that I canít use the X2 to transport my kayak, which I expect to be able to do with a Sports Activity Vehicle.

Thanks for any info on this!

I'm pretty sure your dealer is wrong.

Thank you for the response. I hope you're right; I'll update the thread with what I hear from BMW of North America on Monday.

I'm pretty confident that I'm right. I suspect that you will be somewhat shocked when you find out what the dealer will be charging to install them, however.

This matter is really confusing and annoying for US customers. "Officially," BMW USA has elected to not allow roof rails in the USA. I have heard conflicting reports on why, but most likely it was a Marketing decision to sell the car as an "Urban Rebel." If you've seen the ads for the X2 in the US, you'll know what I'm talking about.

To answer your question - yes it is possible to get rails. I was able to order an X2 in Chicago. It was not easy and I was initially told no by the dealer, their regional rep and BMW NA. I can help you navigate how to do this, but need to know if (i) you already own an X2 or (ii) wish to order one.

Thank you for that update. I already own my X2 and have mentioned to BMW NA that I was dismayed that there are no X2's available with roof rails. If you can share insight on how to navigate this, I would very much appreciate it.

My dealer received the attached service bulletin from BMW NA in early May. Not the best solution. Would cost $646 for the parts and 3.5 hours of labor. They basically need to remove and reinstall the headliner in order to do the job.

There is a way to order the car with the rails installed at the factory (no additional charge) but it takes a long time.

An update on progress

Well, I discussed my situation with BMW of North America and they were surprised that my dealer didn't want to install roof rails on my X2. However, as dealers are independent businesses they are allowed to do or not do whatever they see fit.

The suggested remedy from BMW NA is to reach out to other dealers in my area to see, if they will install them. I contacted one thus far, and waiting for a response from them.

I have special ordered parts and options that are not available in the US but are available in Germany. This includes Leather dash, special headliners on 5ers. Just tell your dealer you want to special order a German option and that they need to work through their regional sales manger to get it done.

Hi, curious if anyone has found a remedy for the roof rail situation. I purchased an X2 Xdrive this month (Nov). Needing roof rails now. The dealer states it's 6 hours of labor + $600 for the rails themselves, totaling after tax $1700. Has anyone found a more reasonable solution? Thanks in advance

Hey friend. I have installed a roof system on my BMW. It was very easy because I have found an article about this on https://toolsspecialist.com/. I am sure that you can solve your problem as well. You can find all the needed information there, just read attentively. Good luck!
