Off the top of my head:

-Rod bearings (will lead to catastrophic failure if not replaced)
-Throttle actuators
-Fuel pump
-SMG Clutch sensor
-SMG motor pump
-High oil consumption
-These cars EAT through tires

I got a basic Powertrain warranty with a third party company - I knew if I didn't I'd be worried sh*tless about my engine and the bearings failure while driving. Be careful though many warranty companies don't cover the major components like vanos and smg.

I've been quoted about 3K to replace the rod bearings in these cars, I feel that is inexpensive enough to get them replaces on purchase of the car

This is an option as well, but with the issues with Vanos and SMG i'd say a warranty is the better route. 46k is low mileage to be replacing them as well, generally board members change them out anywhere from 60k-100k

with the price of these cars low, taking care of the major issues upfront could save time and money and a lot of frustration.
