G30 (2017 - Current)
The next generation 5 Series, chassis code G30, arrives at dealers in February 2017. Looking like a scaled down 7 Series and riding on the CLAR platform, the new 5 Series will have a focus on lightweight and sporty performance. Engines options will come from BMW's new B family for the 530 and 540 and a turbocharged V8 for the M550i. Read more about the 2017 5 Series

Gesture Control Sensor

What sensor does BMW use to track the Gesture Control finger movements? Is it IR? Where is the sensor located?

I took my Valentine 1 out of one car to use it in our 2019 G30 for a road trip. It squawked "laser" from the moment I turned it on and stayed that way. What inside the cabin is making the V-1 do that?

I was about to post the exact same question. From what I have read here turning off gesture control in IDrive does not disable the sensor but it can be taped over to prevent activation of the laser detector in the V1. Someone who has done this, exactly where does the tape need to be applied in the car? Thanks...

What Else?

Does that sensor control anything else besides Gesture Control?

The sensor is in the front cabin light assembly above your head. There is a small glossy, dark plastic 'piece' in the centre of the assembly and that is the sensor.

Thanks! Found it. Now...Can the sensor be coded so driver can toggle the sensor ON/OFF, since turning off Gesture Control does not turn off the sensor? That would be more elegant than a piece of tape over the sensor. But if not, I'm okay with the tape. My earlier question about does that sensor control anything else besides GC still holds.

I don't think it can be coded as you desire. The sensore doesn't do anything other than GC as far as I know.

I spent the first ten months with Laser off also. But it bugged me not knowing if an LEO was targeting me. When I would drive by a police car, obviously a speed check, and the radar didn't go off... was he taking a break, or using laser?

So I finally covered the gesture sensor with black electrician's tape (as mentioned by so many here). I wasn't using gestures anyways, and the tape is not noticeable. Turned laser back on.

And haven't had a single laser hit in the month since.

This thread reminds me how happy I am for not ordering gesture control. As to laser and my V1, I don't really worry about it because laser is so quick and usually close range that by the time you get the warning you are already caught. And like you I don't get many warnings. In Illinois the only time I get a laser hit is on the tollways that use IPass/EZPass when I go thought the toll collection lane. My guess it is related to cameras photographing your license plate.--Bob
