PLEASE HELP: 2013 or 2014?

New to this forum and hoping those of you with more BMW experience can help me understand... I purchased CPO 2014 BMW 740Li in 2016 from local BMW dealership and since that time, whenever I use the VIN to order accessories or parts (online or from the dealership), it is hit or miss if they fit (floor mats, wheel lugs, etc.). When I enter the VIN in the BMW site for software updates, it lists the vehicle as a 2013 model, although everything in the dealer paperwork from the sale consistently lists it as 2014. The stamp in the door well states manufacture date of 8/2013. Has anyone experienced this before? Can you shed light on which year I really have -- a 2013 or 2014? Thank you in advance for any guidance you can offer.

2013 & 2014 are fairly identical except instrument cluster.

Always use the model year of your car when searching. The build date is mostly irrelevant except for cases where there are changes within the production run (ie. TPMS switched from RDE012 to RDE017 for MY2014 vehicles produced after March 2014).

There are actually a surprising number of changes between MY2013 and MY2014. Couple examples include dynamic digital instrument cluster (6WB), iDrive controller with touch (TCB), Comfort Access trunk close (MY2013 only supports kick to open), as well as the TPMS change mid-production mentioned above.

In the US market...the DOT (dept of transportation) requires that the 10th digit of the VIN represents the official model year of the car. And yes, a car can be built in one year, but be considered another model year.

In the past, September used to be the roll out month for the new model year (similar to how September used to be the month for new TV shows to begin)...but sometimes a model year is shortened or lengthened for various reasons. Also, to meet a September roll out...the car needs to be built prior to that month.

For example, the e39 5 series debut was held up in the US market due to the federal OBD II requirement. The rest of the world got the e39 in 1996...but the US market began the e39 as a 1997 model year. But the 1997 e39 model year started in JUNE 1996 in the USA. And the e34 5 series continued to be built up until April 1996...but those models were still officially designated as 1995 models.

Back to the 10th VIN designation...see the chart below...and again, whatever your 10th digit is...that is what the car is officially designated as. If its a D it is a 2013 model year...if it is an E, then it is officially a 2014 model year.

FYI...the numerical zero "0" has started to be used in the US market VINs...but the alpha characters I, O, Q, U, & Z still aren't used to prevent confusion.
