Rollover Controller Module Problem (code: 9402)

I had some problems with battery few weeks ago in my 55reg 650i convertible (all sorted, new battery fitted now) and suddenly airbag light popped on dashboard and message on screen about restraint system not working properly. I've tried to delete it in local garage with no result. It showed on diagnostic as Rollover Controller internal fault (CODE 9402) and it was impossible to clear. About a week later I went to local 'BMW specialists' with more advanced diagnostic computer (he said its the same BMW main dealers use) and he had an attempt to clear the fault - no result. He said that the only way to resolve this issue is to replace unit. He said he can do it for 300 (brand new module) + labour... around 380 total +VAT.
Now,I found a guy on ebay that has this units (second hand) for sale. He said the only one thing I need to check is the connector color - Green or Grey and he can supply this unit for 150 and I can change it myself.

Did any of you guys had the same problem?
Is it just a straight swap and problem will go away or do I need to visit BMW dealer and pay 1000 to fix it?

Regards,
Adam

I have had this error 1 time on my 750 when the battery was going bad. After I replaced the battery & charged it for 12 hours overnight, I could clear the error. The error has to be cleared in the module having problems, & reset the ECU in that module. I would charge the battery over the weekend, & have your local shop clear the error in the ECU itself.

Did you charge the battery for 12 hours before trying clearing the error. What program did he use, & how did he perform the diagnostics?

xrix4096,
I was just about to buy one from ebay as well, was yours with exactly same numbers as the faulty one? people who sell them say they are compatible with other numbers... maybe my mechanic is right. he said i need a brand new one as second hand ones are already matched with original cars and might not work... or somebody is selling faulty units on ebay?

Are you planning to go to Dealer BMW garage to check the issue?

Regards

Sorry for digging up the old thread but if anyone is interested to know the fix since there are no exact answers.

The issue with the ROC module is the EEPROM's hex code is messed up. It's 100% fixable as i just rewrote the proper code to mine without having to desolder the chip.

Hey GatesN54,

Please do let me know how to do this. Mine still has the problem and is about to fail it's MOT next week because of it. I'm a software engineer and have some electronic experience and equipment too so hopefully I can use your method if you are willing to share.

Thanks!

Hi Guys, sorry for late reply. I managed to fix mine by buying second hand unit on ebay (paid 60). Local BMW specialist ask me to get one with same software and same hardware (all info on top of the unit). It took him 30 seconds to code it after swap. No problems since.

I used carprog to program the chip on the circuit board. You can pick one up with the adaptors on ebay. Ill need the dump from the eeprom on your bad module to correct it
