Replacement Key FOB Needed - Help Requested

Hi:

I lost my Key FOB today for my 2011 535xdrive. (I have another one, but I need two of them). Do I have to go to the dealer to get a new one? Or are there legitimate resellers out there where I can purchase one and program it? The one site I found suggests that I could purchase the Key FOB for about $60, but it looks like I would then have to have a locksmith program the key, which might end up costing the same as buying from the dealer.

Any thoughts would be appreciated!

Thanks.

search on the subject.

I got one for 250.00. the guy used a brand new keyfob from BMW.

Many locksmiths will say they can do it, but most cannot. You have to find someone who has the ability to copy the encryption to the new fob. Do not be fooled into buying one off of ebay that claims to have flashed the fob.

Your local BMW dealership can also disable the lost fob. If you lost it in a public place that you frequent...you may want to do this in case someone finds the remote (or took the remote) and are awaiting for the car to return etc. If you have the lost remote disabled...then you won't have to worry about anyone that finds the remote and will try to use it on your car.

I just replaced a lost key fob. It was $320 at the dealer and another $70 to program the comfort access and disable the lost key. It took one day for the new key to arrive, which will be specific to your vin.

He sais: I don't dare to cause i do not know what thy are for... might be the remote connect app needs one and/or the after market alarm with vehicle tracking system needs one... So whats true?

I have no opinions on 3rd party key options, but here's what I ended up doing when 1 of my 2 keys was stolen.
Dealer scanned the key I had and it showed up as #2. That meant #1 was stolen, so they coded it as in-op. This doesn't prevent the crook from removing the blade to open any of the 2 locks on the car (driver's door, center console), but he/she would never be able to start the car. I was also told that BMW only assigns 10 keys with unique IDs to this car, ever (it's a 2015 535dX). So if I lose the remaining 9, I'll need the locks replaced, as this gets me a fresh set of 10. With ID and the VIN, the key was ordered from the dealer, When it arrived it worked immediately. This is very different from the E39 days when there was a series of steps you had to do in order for the key and car to recognize each other.
Yes, the key is pricey. But the hassle factor was virtually zero and the whole thing went smoothly.
