Car cranks but won't start

I drove my 05 X5 about 52 miles one day and turned the car off. Once I returned to the car, it would only crank but wouldn't start. I replaced the relay hoping this would work and still nothing. After getting the car towed, I had the fuel filter replaced because this had needed to be done. The car still would only crank and not start. I then took it to a German mechanic shop. He stated he believed it was the car key as he couldn't find anything else wrong. He replaced the car key and still the car only cranks but will not start. After about 2 months in the shop with no luck, I was advised to pick the car up because they could not figure out why it would crank and not start. He states "it seems to be a security issue". Please help!

Hi Anna Marie! I'm not sure if you've fixed this issue but I just had this happen to me yesterday on my '06 X5 4.4i. My issue happened to be my fuse blew for my 12V power outlets(cigarette lighters) and as I was out and it was late and I still wanted to be able to charge my phone I looked for a spare 25A but didn't have one so I looked through the fuse panel in the glove box and found another 25A fuse marked as "NAVIGATION". My X doesn't have a nav system so I figured I'd just borrow that one for now until the next day. So I took it out and popped it in the slot for the 12V outlets and they worked fine, went to start the car and exactly what you described! Constantly turning over but not firing!! I don't know this for certain but I think it is the security system that triggers it and cut the fuel supply off. I put the fuse back into the "NAVIGATION" slot and it started up no problem. Hope this helps! Good luck!

may be the crank or camshaft sensors but seeing you had in bmw they would see this when doing tests
