replaced clockspring with no change. I get a DME fault immediately. It is identified as 2d multifunction steering wheel control module interface. Can I program the new clockspring with a foxwell NT510 scanner? does anyone know the procedure?

No programming required for clockspring.

Don't see what I'm about to suggest often on the e53...but you've described many of the symptoms of a failing ignition switch.

This is a oft discussed topic...so a simple google search (BMW failing ignition switch) should pull up past threads and videos that show this seemingly unrelated symptoms that all correct themselves after the ignition switch is changed (or cleaned).

There is a test that you can do that sometimes can get many of the symptoms to replicate themselves:
  1. Start the engine, turn on the radio
  2. Reach up and pull down the passenger sun visor
  3. Open the mirror cover on the visor's mirror

If the radio turns off (or turns itself on)...or if the horn works or stops working, and look for other electrical gremlins that change when you open/close the mirror cover on the sun visor. Again, if you do a youtube video search...you can find past videos that show some of the weird electrical gremlins that occur.

Again, this is just a suggestion..it may or may not be your actual problem.

Good luck.

I don't know if the OP finally resolved his issue...but in regards to the ignition switch being the culprit...here's a thread from Xoupost (7/14/19) where it (the ignition switch) was the culprit and cleaning it (versus replacing it) fixed the issue: https://xoutpost.com/bmw-sav-forums/...ng-solved.html

After several weeks of testing and reading every post I could find related to a trans failsafe error and the associated errors I have seen with it we came down to this. after replacing the clockspring without any change I stepped out and tried replacing the ignition switch. All symptoms disappeared and the steering column switches are all working. No more errors showing and all working well. Thanks to everyone for suggestions and ideas. I have learned a ton about the BMW brand.
