I took both bulbs out and cleaned the terminals with a cotton bud, the side light display message never came back on, only other thing I know of is the relay may be faulty, there is one relay the controls all the lights, but is split inside in to various cones to direct and control the power outlet to each lighting system

Cheers

Gerry

Gerry, which bulbs did you clean the connectors for side lights or angel eye lights?

AE lights...are side lights. The AEs come on when the light switch is turned from the off position to the 1st position to the right...thus if you have an AE burnt out you will get the side light out message.

Only mentioning this due to many past posts that say all side lights were checked...without specifically identifying the AEs, too.

Thanks for the pic. I did a total walk around in every light position including hazards and all my lights work fine but continue to get the message. So I assume it's a bad sensor but don't know which socket to Clean?

It may not be over yet with checking the bulbs. I've been lucky so far and haven't had to do anything with my turn indicators...and these bi-xenon adaptive headlight assemblies on the facelift e53 are a lot different than the regular halogen & xenon lights on my other BMWs.

The LCM III (which we have) has a replacement light feature...which means that on the front and rear...if a bulb burns out...it can substitute another bulb by limiting voltage...or using the other filament in a dual filament bulb.

If this is the case...you may be looking at a bulb from outside of the vehicle...and it looks like the turn park lamps are okay when actually...the LCM may be turning on the turn indicator bulb (filament) and reducing its voltage so that it doesn't shine bright like the turn indicator. With these vehicles...you can't just look at the bulb from outside...you need to physically check each bulb...or do a test that will make a bulb that is been pressed into double duty...go crazy.

For instance...if a front park lamp is burnt out and the turn indicator is pressed into service...turn on the parking lights/headlights (which will get them to turn on)...but if you turn on the hazards or the turn indicators at the same time...the LCM can only illuminate one of those features...either the park light will go off or the bulb will blink for the hazards or turn indicator...it can't do both if one of the dual filaments is burnt out.

Again...you need to physically check the bulbs...not just look at them from the outside of the vehicle.

Thanks for the insight. Sound like a lot of trickery going on to keep bad lights seem like they are working. By doing it in the dark, can you tell which light is the culprit by the amount of illumination. Meaning, the light that's kicking in for the failed one looks dimmer?

The only way I know is to physically look at the bulb when its a dual filament. You can visually see that a filament is burnt or detached.

BTW, I jinxed myself last night. On the way home my CHECK SIDE LIGHTS warning came on. Got home and I have a burnt out AE.

I had the "Check Side Lights" message come on my X5 the other day. Before checking the forums I looked at the "side lights" on my car (the one behind the front wheels) and sure enough they were not on. After spending hours trying to get them to light up I searched the forums and read where "side lights" according to BMW are Angel Eye lights. Go figure. I looked at mine and sure enough one was not working. I switched bulbs and they both started working again and the message went away. Still puzzled why the lights on the side of my car (behind the front wheels) were not on, it dawned on me to try the turn signal and sure enough they flash to the beat of the turn signal. How frustrating but thanks to the internet for helping me track down the issue.
