SZL Coding & CAFD Help

Hi,

I noticed the shift paddles on my 2011 520d F10 weren't working (hadn't used them for a couple of years) so when I recently took my car into the dealer they said the SZL needed to be replaced and programmed......and it was going to cost ~$2K...immediate reaction was don't use the paddles so I'll save myself some heart ache and cash.

Through reading this forum I built some confidence to replace the SZL and potentially code the unit myself. So far $95 invested in replacing the SZL with an eBay purchase (matching part no). Paddles don't work however all other functions still do.

Using ISTA I can see I have a number of faults associated with the SZL (image attached).
Then using ESYS with the Full 63.3 PSdz I have attempted to flash the CAFD through the recommended approach (Connect => Read FA (VO) => Activate FA (VO) => Read SVT (VCM) => Left *Click on SZL_LWS=> Click on "Detect CAF for SWE" => Select the CAFD from the latest I* Level => Select OK => Right *Click on SZL_LWS (the ECU itself not the underlying CAFD) => Select CODE.) Didn't make it all the way!

After reading SVT, and parsing through the list I can't see a CAFD file for the SZL to code.
ESYS doesn't enable the "Detect CAF for SWE" to push. (Image attached)

Appreciate if someone could guide me in the next steps to inject a new CAFD. Current I-Step is: F010-12-07-533 (As per ISTA fault analysis)

I am hoping reflashing a new CAFD into the SZL and configuring will remedy fault codes (803440, 030490, 030364, 801C20, CF2101) then a steering initialisation will solve 48260F. (Or should I be preparing myself for some further heart ache?)

Cheers and many thanks in advance.

Stephen

Its no need to change szl. Just change FA. Delete 205, add 2TB and code egs, szl, kombi and icm

OK...makes sense, however SZL doesn't have a CAFD file to change the config and code. (or have I missed something?)

So far the recommendation is to step back to E-Sys 3.27.1 and give it a go. I'll try that, but am happy for others to give alternate/additional guidance...

Yes. Use 3.27.1 or 3.33.4. You do not need Launcher to inject CAFD. You can also try selecting cafd from different I-Step close to your current.

Hi Almaretto,

Thanks for the advice.

It's kind of like two steps forward, one step back. Using E-Sys 3.27.1 and latest version of the FULL-PSDZ (63.3) I was able to inject a new CAFD file, CAFD_0000033D_001_009_001 (i-Step F010-12-07-520) and then CAFD_0000033D_001_009_002 (i-Step F010-12-10-500). Both successfully loaded separately, testing the first and then the second file, and both independently come up with an ISTA+ error "030311 Multifunction Steering Wheel (MFL): Wrong Version". The fault code "CF2101 No Message (operation of shift paddle, 0x207)" is still active. I haven't upgraded anything on the F10. So I think it's still a software issue.

I've double checked in ISTA+ and tested the paddles through Vehicle Management->Troubleshooting->Fault Patterns->61 General vehicle electrical system/31 Switch, sensor/010 Switch, multifunction steering wheel/shift paddle" and they both generate an active signal when toggled/pulled.

CAFD_0000033D_001_009_001 should be the right file and it's the closest to my vehicle's i-Step F010-12-07-533.

Any further guidance would be greatly appreciated!!!

Stephen

Try to VO Code the newly cafd injected SZL.

Might be some fdl value needs to be adjusted to default state.

Hope it helps
